By Charles Lamey Chris Hilljurf will go down in popjnusic history for being one of. the founding members'pf one of the 60s most successful and influential American rock groups The. Byrds. But, Hillman isn't one to sit back and bask in past j glories, te-Tje'd hard at work working on a solo country career. I Desert Rise (Sugar Hill, P.O. Box 4040. Duke Station, Durham, NC 27706) is his latest solo outing, and it ' ranks with his best work t with The Byrda and Flying . Burrito Brothers. Hillman's .choice of ^ material is impeccable, his voice is in great shape, and his band's enthusiasm mat- t ches his own. Desert Rose is an honest, enjoyable country, record that should bring Hillman to a new, larger audience. A LOT OF people probably think one of the great R&B labels of the 50s, Specialty Records, went out of business, but nothing could be further from the truth. This pioneering label is still active, reissuing some of jheir treasures. Larrv Williams' Here's Larry Williams (Specialty, 1 8300 Santa Monica Blvd., , Los Angeles, CA. 90069) is a , solid effort from one of the many R&B inspired rockers to emerge from New Orleans in the 50s. His frantic style has often been compared to Little Richard but his hits, "Bony Maronie" and "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" proved him to be a consistently entertaining performer Here's Larry Williams would make a wild party album. ALSO ON Specialty is the lone album by ttte. late Guitar Slim. The Things That I used To shows a unique, personal approach to the blues. Slim s emotional performances showed a strong influence of both soul and gospel music. The title track is probably the standout song, thanks to the support of Ray Charles' piano, but the whole thing is a treat for blues fanatics. Although this New Orleans musician died at the age of 33 in 1959, thanks to Specialty his music lives on.
