Dogs Have Their Days In Retrieval Displays *
.STONE HARBOR - Retriever in-the-water demonstrations will be a new feature of the New Jersey Wings 'n Water Festival Saturday and Sunday. The two-day event celebrates the, many natural coastal attractions of Cape May and Cumberland counties such as duck hunting and water recreation. A world class decorative bird caning show, decoy and wildlife art shows are some of the other activities planned. Golden retrievers. Springer spaniels. Labradors an Chesapeaks Bay retrievers will be showing their hunting form in minitrials conducted from the salt marsh trail to the tidal creek directly behind tjie \Vetlands Institute, headquarters for the festival. WRIGHTWAY Kennels, which specializes in professional training of hunting dogs, will field "Thistle." a registered liver and white 2-year-old Springer which holds a Working Dog Excellence Certificate. Owners Joe and Karen Wright are enthusiastic about Springer spaniels, which they breed. "These are the most adaptable dogs." says Joe. "They hunt quail, pheasant, dove or go in the water for ducks and geese, and they are wonderful family dogs, with a warm, easygoing nature." The Wrights, who live in Marmora, will also show Labradors bringing back I birds. These dogs were I developed in Canada and | along the English border of | Scotland. i .

Stock Up Seed A birdseed sale will be held Under the Big Top at the Wetlands Institute on Stone Harbor Boulevard Saturday and Sunday. Patrons can buy now for wintering birds.
ONLY ONE retriever is American: the poptilar Chesapeake Bay Retriever, developed in Maryland, which will perform for owners Bob and Dee Bailey from Woodbine. The Bailey's Chesapeake Bay "Chipper" at 3 has just received her Working Dog Certificate. Their 9-year-old Golden retriever "Cody." which also holds a Working Certificate. is a field trial and companion dog, and will also simulate a working situation. The Goldens, first registered in 1925 in the United States, originated in Englaqd. They are trained to stay in a boat or blind incold weather and can withstand many cold hours
in the water. Heavier of bone and of thicker coat, the Golden is the most recent breed of retrievers among the five kinds ex- ' isting in the world today. "MANY DUCK hunters feel a dog is essential to the pursuit," says Dee Bailey, who is a substitute teacher in Ocean City. "Frankly, I don't see how they get along without one," she adds. Both she and her husband, who is grounds foreman at Stockton State College, hunt. The retriever demonstrations will be held at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and again Sunday during the New Jersey Wings 'n Water festival, which is a benefit for the Wetlands Institute.
