Injured Birds Star Under the Big Top
STONE HARBOR - A live barred owl, red-tailed hawk and a saw -what owl will be the birdlife stars under the large striped tent at the Wetlands Institute during the Wings 'n Water Festival. They are among eighteen exhibits on display this weekend. ^ Each bird is a damaged animal from the Avian Rehabilitation Center in Seaville. None of the three can be returned to the wild, because of theirhandicaps. Dotty Hoffman, a volunteer at the center,*says her organization cared for some 350 ill or injured birds last year with the help of five volunteers. WILD BIRDS Rehabilitation and Research Center of Surfside on Long Beach Island, another exhibitor, handled about 1,200 birds in 1983 from parts of Cape May. Atlantic, Monmouth, Burlington and Ocean Counties, according to
director Betsy Jones, who also supervises the center in Seaville. In addition to the bird trio, a marine touch tank operated by institute staff will display several varieties of fish, crabs and other marine life under the * tent. New Jersey Parks and Forests will celebrate "The Year of the Parks"; Stockton State College will offer education in the sciences; and the Jersey Cape Shell Club will display outstanding shell collections. Other exhibitors include the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, Cape Atlantic Soil Conservation District, the Pinelands Commission, NJ Sea Grant,; Atlantic Aububon, Docks Unlimited,; the Sierra Club, NJ Fish Game and Wildlife, Burdette Tomlin Auxiliary, NJ Raptor Association, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the NJ Waterfowlers r

N.J. Duck Stamp in Exhibition \
\ STONE HARBOR. - A major rising star at the second New Jersey Wings 'n Water Festival this weekend will be wildlife artist Tom Hirata. who painted the first N.J. duck stamp recently released by the state for sale to waterfowl hunters and collectors. Hirata will appear in a special new Duck Stamp Exhibition at the Stone Harbor borough hall with an extensive federal duck stamp and print collection, which will be on loan from a private owner. The first Garden State stamp will be sold and print orders will also be taken during the event. Hirata Will attend the •M i
show both Saturday and Sunday at the Second Avenue borough hall with several of his outstanding prints for sale. His winning design of a pair of canvas back ducks resting on water will be on display, and prihts may be ordered throughout September. Sales of the first NewJersey duck stamp at $2.50 for residents and $5 for nonresident hunters will help pay for acquisition, protection, maintenance and improvement of habitat for watefowl and many species of birds, fish and other wildlife of commercial value as well as the endangered and rare animals.
