Dear Ruth: I was introduced to your column while here on vacation and truly enjoyed it. I would greatly appreciate any and all diet material you could send me and I will share it with our diet group at school this year. My problem is that I am usually fine until after dinner. I reason that I am full and shouldn't eat any more as I am less active in the evening. Yet it is then I seem to want to chomp on rice cakes, etc., anything available. Signed: "Desserts Drive Me Crazy" Dear "DDMC": First let me compliment you on that diet group at school. What an upbeat idea — returning students re-establishing . themselves to straighten out their eating problems. . i All of you are to be I commended. BEING AWAY at school I is a perfect time to I recognize and change bad I eating habits. Especially if I your meals at home were I not suitable to your inI dividual needs. Now you I can change that without I feelings of hurt or guilt. Another benefit of a I group is that each member I can offer extra support and I help in ways not easily acI complished alone. For inI stance, just as you are * I about to dip into a big I dollop of whipped cream I for your serving of fruit a I friendly, "Come on, that I fruit is delicious without I that cream" can give the I strength to decline. It will I also prevent those awful I feelings of guilt because I you had weakened. Now for your problem — I you have done an excellent I job of pinpointing your proI blem of compulsive eating I AFTER dinner. This is I critically important I because it is much easier to I seek a solution when you
recognize the problem. YOU KNOW the time of temptation and you have isolated the tastes in your system whose cravings ' cannot be satisfied. There is no more for you to know. Now you can begin to resolve it, but you must WILLINGLY make the change. Liken your situation to ' the process of learning to swim. We must first let go of the edge of the pool and lift our feet off the bottom. To continue to hang on merely delays the learning process. By honing on we may minimize the chance of drowning, but we also - obliterate growth and the tremendous elation we ex- . perience when we find we can actually swim. So don't ^/hang on to the old cravings to "cbomp" on something after dinner. The longer you "hang on" the more difficult it will be to "let go." MOST OF the "hunger pangs" we experience is usually boredom in^ disguise. So let's change that. Anticipate your pitfalls and be ready with an antidote. If your studies don't occupy enough of your time, take up sculpting or join an aerobic class. * Organize your evenings so that you don't have time to sit and "chomp". You might call a friend or write letters to family and friends at home. You could schedule a leisurely bubble bath, give yourself a facial and manicure and pedicure one evening a week. Walking or jogging is another thought. These are positive actions which will leave you little time for boredom and poor eating J habits. In closing, I would recommend you read William Dufty's book, "Sugar Blues" which should be available at any library. It is also in paperback. Your continued craving for desserts once you start is dealt with in the book. It may prove interesting reading for your diet group. Enjoy your school days. If you would like help getting started on a diet program. write to Ruth A. Wanberg, c/ou of this newspaper. Box 430. Cape May Court House, NJ 08210.
