Turtle Races Spell Peril to Turtles

TRENTON - New Jersey residents are coming out of their shells. They are finding recreation in a new form: the pulsepounding sport of turtle racing. This sport, while not exactly new, is apparently becoming the rage with those whose sporting blood is satisfied even by slowfooted turtles. There seem to be a number of reasons for this. These include sport, perhaps a side bet or two. money-raising for charity and even as a way to get people interested in wildlife. BUT WHILE the. spinetingling action is exciting and there are benefits to the turtle-racers and others, the turtles themselves might not be benefitting. According to a New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection spokesperson at the Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife, there are definite illegalities involved. Some of these relate to the welfare, of these swift beasts. For example, anyone possessing a turtle (other than Eastern Painted or Snapping) needs a permit to do so. On top of this, it is illegal to collect turtles from the- wild in NewJersey. UNFORTUNATELY, turtle racing does en-, courage collecting. The dangers of collecting ace obvious: reducing the turtle population, interrupting breeding^nd giving others the satire idea as an acceptable thing to do. The danger to some of the turtles doesn't stop there. When the turtles are mixed together to ready them for the big race, they can pick up diseases from each other. Collected turtles might then be released, carrying disease back into the enI vironment. It seems that even with the protection of a shell, the lot of a turtle

can be made difficult by well-meaning people. RECENTLY a Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife spokesperson attended a turtle race held for charitable purposes. Many of the speedsters entered were wild « ught. This included no less than four of the increasingly rare and threatened Wood Turtle. In the future, the Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife will be monitoring these events more closely. "They will try to get people to know and obey the regulations. They will also help the organizers of these races to find ways to remain legal and to protect the turtles at the same time. Otherwise, turtle racing, itself might *" become extinct in New Jersey.
