SUDDEN IMPACT (Warner Brothers) "R" The return of Dirty Harry should please home video enthusiasts who crave plenty of action and excitement. For those few who aren't aware of Dirty Harry, he's a San Francisco detective who never listens to his superiors, but does speed up the long drawn out trial process by often eliminating those caught in the act of a crime. Harry has seen too many get off free, so be has little faith in the system. All I can say, is if you've broken the law you'd be a fool to tangle with Dirty Harry Sudden Impact is, by far, one of the most consistently enjoyable Dirty Harry films so far. As usual. Clint Eastwood is in the lead role (he also directed the picture). movie buffs who feel Seen Connery will always be James Bond and Basil Kathbone will always be Sherlock Holmes, also have the same feelings about

Eastwood as Dirty Harry. His beaten, tired face captures the years of pain and frustration Harry has felt. When he speaks it's in such a cynical tone that shows he's lost faith with the human race. In Sudden Impact Eastwood really brings Harry to life, giving a great performance. UNLIKE SOME of those that preceeded it. Sudden Impact's story also works well. Sure, th^re are plenty of shootouts ahd fights, but there's some Vi eat to this tale. A girl (Sondra Locke) is seeking revenge on those who raped her and her sister. One by one she's killing them off and Harry is hot on^her trail-even leaving San Francisco for the small town where most of her victims live. The whole thing builds to an exciting climax and then fools the viewer with a surprise ending. Sudden Impact won't let action fans down as there's plenty of it. BREATHLESS (Vestron) "R" Richard Gere gives a fantastic performance as a totally wacked out, smalltime hustler who has fallen hopelessly in love with a French girl living in Los Angeles. Gere accidentally kills a policeman and, instead of fleeing to Mexico when he has the chance, he hangs around to convince the girl to fall in love with him. Unfortunately, Gere's performance is all in vain, as his fellow actors fall short, resulting in this story's being one * long tedious affair. Gere's enthusiasm indicates ■Breathless had potential, but outside of a few scenes this is slow and dumb. DARK STAR (VCI) "PG" This student-made t science fiction comedy has been a popular cult film and should do well on the home video market. Dark J Star was the first feature I by Director Jolin Carpenter (Hollo- I ween/Christine/The I Thing ) and it was co- I written with Dan O'Bannon (Alien/Blue Thunder). Even though Dark Star is their first feature, it's obvious these two were going to have the successfid careers they've ended up having. The humor is subtle, the special effects work despite the low budget, and even at its worst. Dark Star j never ceases tn be interesting?^-
