Beach Bowl III a Case Of Classic Grid Revenge
Maxwell Field in Wildwood was the scene of the annual Beach Bowl high school football game and members of the Father Judge team will long
remember their trip to the Jersey shore. In the contest, Judge handled Saint John Neumann easily in a.., 47-6 romp. Last fall the two
Philadelphia schools met for the City Catholic League title and were in- , vited back to Wildwood to kick off the football season. After winning the first
two Beach Bowls, Neumann couldn't pick up a single first down and gained a total of only 41 offensive yards. On the other hand Judge used ball control to score seven times while keeping the defense off the field. THE GAME WAS highlighted by long scoring passing plays of 47 and 80 yards. On the first, quarterback Ed Tomasitis hit Gerry- Langton and the seeond came late when second team signal caller Kurt Estes hit the receiver Mike Tierntw. When the Judge defense got its chance it seemed to always come through. Several times the defense gave the offense great field position and even contributed a touchdown. Defensive back Tim Wilson scampered 30 yards with an intercepted pass for the sue points. IT WAS MUCH x easier than anyone expected for the winner of the Wildwood Crest Basketball League last week. After jumping out to an early 18 to 4 advantage, Everybody's Game waltzed to a 76-48 win over Holiday Motel. Bob Belansen led the early surge with eight points before sitting down with three personal fouls. At that point, Chris Corchiani took over to lead all scorers with 29 markers. Belansen finished with 19. Joe Aita played a part in Holiday's only rally but it was too little, too late. Aita topped the Holiday scoring list with 16 points. John Souchak and Alex Mairone also hit double figures for the losers as each canned 13 points. OVER-THE-RAINBOW ran its record at the Diamond Beach Volleyball League to 9 and 0 during : the regular season, but when the playoffs started someone forgot to tell Cape Island Sailing Cruise players were the underdogs. Cape Island, the defending champions, swept Over-the-Rainbow in three games, 15-11, 15-10 and 15-3. The victory meant more than the title to Cape Island. It also took home the 5400 top prize. Members of the winning
club included Jan Calloway, Sherri Hickok, John Wilsey. Rick Ferrante. Bob Jackson, Bill Abadie and Sharon Mericie. Both teams had to survive semi-final matches earlier in the day to set up the title match. Cape Island defeated the Wildwood Beach Patrol and Rainbow downed the Diamond Beach Stars. REMARKS: Now that the Philadelphia Phillies have dropped out of the chase for the division title to the Phillies of the Midwest, it's time to look back and ask a few questions that don't need to be answered. Do we really have tp put up with another season of Paul Owens as Phillie manager? Was A1 Holland used to the extent that his arm lost all its life? Did the injury to John Denny cost the Phils any chance at a pennant, forcing Kevin Gross to become a starter? Is Von Hayes the only complete player on the roster? Did Juan Samuel slide just' enough to give the Rookie of the Award to Dwight Gooden of the Mets? Will Mike Schmidt finish third in the M.V.P. balloting as usual? -s Who will be the first Phillie to get a trip to Cleveland or Chicago over the winter? What will the Phillies do with three first basemen who want to and can play every day? Is this the off season that " Tug McGraw finally becomes Phillie Phanatic Jr.? Was the Phanatic the most exciting part of Phillie home games? c Are the Phillies really that secure that they don't have to participate in the free agent draft as they have already said? LETS MOVE ON to the season at hand, that being the National Football League season. The Eagles got off to a poor start
against the average New York Giants. The Eagles will go only downhill if they don't improve their pass rush. The defensive backs can cover those fast receivers for only a limited amount of time — like 30 seconds. The Eagles bad pass rush made an instant all-star out of Phil Simms. It's a good thing he got into the record books when he had the chance. He's really not that f good. The most interesting development of this young season is the injury to Seattle's Kurt Warner, who is out for the season. The Sea hawks sent out a quick S.O.S. and Franco Harris appeared. Franco is no Warner, but he should run his way out of bounds for a few vards.
