Sulfite Regulation Meeting

MAYS LANDING - The Food and Drug Administration will hold an open meeting 1-3 p.m. Monday. Sept. 17, at the Atlantic County Cooperative Extension Service. 1200 West Harding Highway. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss and exchange views on an important issue facing the agency, the continued regulation of sulfites in foods and drugs. Sulfiting agents are chemical preservatives extensively used to maintain the fresh appearance of foods, such as fruits, green vegetables, potatoes . or salads . They are also used in many processed foods, such as fruit drinks, wine or baked goods, and in the processing of some c foods including gelatin, corn sweeteners and food starches. Another function they serve is to preserve the potency of drugs. There are six such agents: sulfur dioxide, sodium sulfite, sodium and potassium bisulfite, and sodium and potassium metabisulflte. IN JULY 1982 the FDA made a proposal to. affirm the generally recognized as safe (gras) status of sulfating agents based on a March 1977 report of the "Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, experts qualified to evaluate the safety of substanc&jijJdecHoloodir Publicfcomment on this GOP Elector NORTH WILDWOOD - Anthony Catanoso, Freeholder .^director and mayor of this community, has been nominated as a Republican Presidential Elector. He was selected by the members of the" Republican State Committee Aug. 30. Wins Degree ERMA — , Sandra M ^Keenan of 813 Weeks Landing- Rd. received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Montclair State College at graduation exercises in May. She majored in recreation professions.

proposal resulted in the recognition of the widespread use of sulfiting agents on foods by the American food industry and increased consumer reports of adverse reactions. This issue is not a simple one, keeping in mind the large variety of sulfite treated foods, packaging techniques and , labeling requirements. The age»« y is currently working on a document to

supersede the July 1982 proposal to more specifically describe the food uses that the agency considers to be gras, and is soliciting public comment on any aspect of the proposal. For further information \ about this meeting or to receive any background » materials, call Lillie Dorto Wright or Joan Godal, consumer affairs officers, at (201) 645-3265/6365.
