Cape Vet Aiding On Agent Orange
OCEAN CITY- David J. Gilpin of this city earlier this summer was named by Gov. Thomas Kean to the State Agent Orange Commission. The nine-member group, which is the most active commission of its kind in the country, is devoted to aiding Vietnam veterans and their families. Gilpin, 32, in the early 1970s served four years in Vietnam, where the chemical defoliant Agent Orange was widely used. "I sought the appointment because I felt it was my civic duty," he commented upon his appointment. ALREADY ACTIVE in his church; the Knights of Columbus, local Kiwanis Club and various veterans organizations, Gilpin, an Atlantic City real estate representative, said he will be serving at what he terms "the leisure of the governor." "The biggest way I can help is to work diligently with the other members of the commission to try to find the missing link bet-, ween Agent Orange and the multitude of physical and mental afflictions suffered by Vietnam vets," Gilpin said. "Most veterans wjant an answer. Either it %the cause of their problems or it isn't." According to Wayne Wilson, executive director of the commission, the group has commenced a significant research effort,
funded by tbe state, to determine whether that link exists. WILSON SAID Kean selected the Ocean City resident to the post to fulfill criteria that six of the commissioners be Vietnam vets and that South Jersey be represented. "Dave will give a much needed presence in South Jersey. He's very interested in seminars on Agent Orange and I think he will encourage and facilitate that," he said. "He'll hold evening meetings where the vets can come out and meet him. The best learning tool for him will be to meet them and their families. "We'll be working him pretty hard," Wilson added. Wilson cited Gilpin's desire and eagerness to serve as ''sheer volunteerism" and Gilpin apparently doesn't fear diligent toil; "I have to do my best for not only South Jersey but also for the state and nationwide." he said. "The majority of veterans have been affected by Agent Orange or had some contact with it in some way." WILSON NOTED that the research was coming at a critical and exciting time since hearings concerning a class action suit byAfieb nam veterans/levied against manufacturers of Agent Orange are continuing. Gilpin called the proposed $180 million settlement a slap in the face because it^left questions like hdw many vets were affected and what is the extent of their illnesses unanswered. Gilprin recently requested Jhe ,Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders to consider flying the POW-MIA flag at the County Court House until all vets'were accounted for. Ho— plans to make sin>ilar request^o Atlantic and Cumberland County Freeholders. ' I , THE AGENT Orange Commission was established in 1980 toVoordinate scientific research _and^l»-' provide medical, l^STand other services for Vietnam vets. \ According to Wilson, the. state's commission has the most aggressive and ex ten- * sive outreach program in tbe nation although he would like to see more South Jersey vets benefit. "Dave will help us determine where services available to vets and their families are lacking and where they are provided, establish the need for monitoring them," he said. For Agent Orange information, call the commission at 984-7396.
