Show Biz Falcons Become Jail Birds
AVALON - Three endangered peregrine falcons were jailed here Saturday afternoon for their own good. "We can now say that some really rare birds have stayed in our cell— and mean it!" chuckled Police Chief Joseph E. Foley. % "It was a simple precaution against birdnappers," explained Avaloo Borough Council member Dick Light, who made arrangements. THE HANDSOME birds of prey, valued at $20,000 each on the international bird black market, arrived from New Paltz, N.Y. at the Wetlands Institute near Stone Harbor for an evening show at the New Jersey Wings 'n Water Festival. They were escorted to the Avalon. Police Department from the Institute, and remained in the pokey under guard while their
owner. Dr. Heins Meng had dinner. They appeared in the multi-media show "Falcons Return, Restoring an Endangered Species" with Dr. Meng at the Avalon Community Hall. The two adult peregrines. "Prince Albert" and "Black Beauty", flew during the show, but the immature male "Prince Phillip II" remained tethered. "Prince Phillip II" is the / grandson of an original pair* "Lancelot" and "Guinevere", who mated in 1967. Meng, a biology professor at State University College in New Paltz, is also Aan artist, lecturer, writer and photographer. The show was one of 45 events scheduled last Saturday and Sunday, ' to celebrate the natural attractions of Cape May and Cumberland Counties.
