B> Ruth Alt i ' U .i ri !>( rt:
Dear Ruth: I'm 73 and much too heavy. I've tried to diet so many times — even have a diet from the K doctor, but still have a problem I don't look it, or act it, but I am very nervous when I get hungry. The hunger comes on H suddenly and my nerves get bad. I feel terrible. The only thing I can do to feel better is eat. At night when I can't sleep I get up and eat, but for that I've been using diet powders and skim milk. I can't exercise much becuase my feet are not good. I'm getting very depressed I don't think there's much I can do but I sure would like to try! "On Medication". DEAR OM: It is possible that the shakiness you feel as a prelude to hunger could merely be a drop in your blood sugar level. If so, that can be avoided by taking your meals at specific times each day and adhering strictly to the schedule. Talk honestly to your doctor about this nervous condition and try to pinpoint its occurrence. Perhaps he may advise much smaller meals spaced closer together in order to keep your metabolism more constant. Diet often plays a crucial role when our bodies seem to be struggling to tell us something. Foods that are high in Sugar escalate our bloody .-sugar level, thus calming us. As the level drops a weakness, akin to the nervousness you describe, can occur. Specifically, you have several things to overcome. EATING (EVEN diet foods) in the middle of the night should not be necessary. It may just be a habit that has become a means of passing the time until you return to bed. Work on changing that habit. If you can't sleep, read. If that is too stimulating, why not get a transistor radio with earphones and lull yourself to sleep with restful music? \ With earphones you won't disturb anyone else Some people who can't \sleep use the time to plan J next day's activities or te letters. Some sew or n do light housecleaning rearranging drawers or closets. One admonition however: Stay out of the kitchen and away from food! IF YOU ARE , inactive, three small well-balanced meals should suffice. More than that, even in the form ' of diet powders, will probably add pounds. Exercise is the easiest way to eat comfortably and yet maintain'^ or even shed weight. Remember that walking is an excellent form of exercise. However, if you are N reluctant to develop an exercise routine because legs, back and feet don't cooperate, then food intake has to be restricted, sometimes drastically, otherwise you will gain too much weight So, with your doctor's approval, try to walk each / day. Just getting outdoors and viewing the changing
seasons can help cure that depression. Incidentally, you are not alone in experiencing overpowering hunger pangs. ON A RECENT shopping trip with a friend the lunch hour came and went while we busily shopped. Back in the car. she asked, "Where would you like to eat?" I replied, "Since you're driving, why don't you chooee?" We went back and forth with suggestions. "Chinese?" "Mexican?" She continued driving. Then suddenly she jammed on the brake and glared at me. "CHOOSE! Or else I'm going to pull into the first place that has anything edible, I don't care if it's seaweed!" My friend had hunger pangs. (We ate Chinese.) MY FINAL suggestion is that you plan your meals AND the time they are •served. Make up a daily menu and follow it. Most of us are comfortable with a four-hour span between breakfast and lunch and 'again between lunch and ' dinner. If evening seems too long that way, try delaying dinner an hour or so, but listen to your body. Develop a routine that will stablize V your nervous system so that you can eventually give up the medication. And do keep me posted. I am interested. If you need help getting started with a diet, write to Ruth A. Wanberg. do of this newspaper, Box 430, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210. Be sure to enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope if you want a personal reply.
