Recently, Elvis Costello has fallen from being a critic's favorite. A good number of critics feel Costello isn't the angry young man he once was and now it's time to brush him aside. It's true, Costello doesn't seem to be as mad at the world as he once did and his most recent effort, Goodbye Cruel Cookie Sale Scheduled RIO GRANDE - The county unit of the American Cancer Society 15 Delsea Dr., will again be taking orders for holiday season cookies. They are packed in a twopound Currier and Ives design tin, that can also be used as a serving tray. Each tin is protected with a plastic seal to prevent accidental opening, and labeled that the cost represents a donation to the society. For futher information call 886-1154. Marine Weekend SEAVILLE - The fifth annual 4-H Marine Science Weekend will be held Oct. 5-7 at the New Jersey Marine Science Consortium, Rte. 9. It is open to teens 14-19, and is expected to draw participants from all over the state. Activities will include studying marine life in the salt marsh, surf, ocean, and laboratory. Both plant and animal life will be studied, plus fish printing, establishing a sail water aquariaum, and marine science career information. For information and registration, coptact Betty Jean Jesuncosky, County 4-H Agent, Cooperative Extension Service, Dennisville Road, Rte. 657, Cape May Court House; . 465-5115.

0 World (Columbia) is ob1 viously • aimed at the 1 mainstream, rock/pop 1 audience / But that doesn't detract s frgtn the fact these are still ) well-crafted numbers, superbly played by his i „ group The Attractions and ? sung by Costello in a sincere, distinctive voice. I Goodbye Cruel World certainly isn't the earth shattering release some of his previous albums have been, but Costello is far from being a spent forte. The Jem never made much headway here and what publicity they did garner centered upon lead vocalst/guitarist/chief writer Paul Weller. Bruce Foxton was the English trio's bassist and occasional writer (penning at least one great number in "Smither-Jones"). This, Touch Sensitive (Arista), is Foxton 's debut solo effort and while it's certainly promising it's not really essential.- Foxton is a decent vocalist and quite adept at writing solid material, but there's nothing here that jumps out and demands^ttention. Touch Sensitive shows Foxton to have a great deal of potential and, hopefully, with his followup effort he'll fulfull his promise. * Grooves In Orbit (Bearsvill) by NRBQ has been out for awhile but as I neglected to mention it here I wanted to tell everyone what a great record it truly is. The group's 10th album shows them in a variety of styles— blues, rock and roll pop, and rockabilly— yet the group retains a unique ' sound. While NRBQ is good natured about its music (citing the Three Stooges as a major influence), that doesn't mean they aren't serious musicians. All of them are outstanding soloists and vocalists, with guitarist Al Anderson and keyboardist Terry Adams being two of the most I distinctive performers to- , day. The material is stunning wife two potential classics in "Rain At The Drive-In" and "A Girl Like That.'' NRBQ is a dynamite, good time band and Grooves In Orbit is a blast from the first note until the last.
