Horizon's Income, Assets Show Gain

morristown - Horizon Bancorp reported on results for the second quarter and first six months of 1984 Net income for the second quarter of 1964 was $6,352,000. up 52 percent from the $4,190,000 reported in 1983. Net income per common share was $0.71, up 6 pet-cent from $0.67 for the prior year. Net income for the first six months of 1984 was $13,170,000, which is 82 percent higher than the $7,228,000 for the first half of 1983. On a per share basis, net income was $1.48, up 28 percent from $1.16 in 1983 HORIZON Bancorp, had total assets of $2,602,000,000 j compared to $1,663,000,000 a year ago — an increase of $939,000,000 or 56 percent Deposits increased to $2,226,000,000 from $1,342,000,000 at the end of June. 1983, up 66 percent.

Net loans at June 30, 1964 were $1,649,000,000 compared to $1,052,000,000 a year ago, a 57 percent increase. William J. Shepherd, president and chief executive officer of Horizon, said, "Our higher earnings are. a result of a better net interest margin, increased productivity coupled with control of non-interest expenses, and the acquisition of The Bank of New Jersey. In addition, if securities transactions were excluded, quarterly net income would have increased 20 percent per share. "Horizon continues to be one of the most profitable large banking organizations in the state. Our six month results show a return on average assets of 1 .07 percent and a return on average shareholders' in; vestment of 16.6 percent which should keep us among the highest of the 10 largest banking organizations in the state.

Net proceeds of the offering will be applied to replace funds used to pay $20 million principal amount of the company's 8 7/8 percent notes due Sept 1, 1984, to repay outstanding bank indebtedness, and for general corporate purposes, including providing funding to the company's subsidiary banks and other affiliates and providing financing for the possible acquisition of, or investment in, other banks and bank-related organizations. The debentures are redeemable on and after Oct. 1, 1987 at prices declining from 107.64 percent if called prior to Sept. 1, 1988 to par on and after Sept. 1, 1995. !
