Stripers Off List for ' 85

COURT HOUSE - Effective Jan 1, 1985 dBd until further notice, the stiped bass will be removed from

the list of fish eligible for prizes in the annual Cape May County Fishing Tournament. «»

The county tournament, which is in its 49th year, has traditionally recognized the striped bass as a game fish. A serious decline in available

numbers of striped bass all along the East Coast has prompted the decision to remove the striper from the list of fish eligible for citations, awards and prizes in the annual countysponsored fishing activity. Louis A. Rodia, who directs the county's fishing tournament, said the Striped Bass would be returned to the eligible species list as soon as there are sufficient numbers of fish to assure £ continuation of quality fishing for this fighting game fish. "THE CAPE MAY County Fishing Tournament has been operated by the Board ef Freeholders for all of the 49 years it has been in existence to promote the county's fresh and salt water fishing opportunities," Rodia said. "Since striped bass are in jeopardy, and since existing stocks should be preserved to promote additional breeding for future years, it seems prudent to not encourage fishing for any species of fish which is in critical shape," Rodia B added. Anglers who catch striped bass through the close of the current contest will receive citations and pins and will be eligible for prizes in the 1984 event, Rodia said. For information on the 1984 contest, write Department of Public Affairs, Box 365, Cape May Court House, N.J. 08210.
