City Gets Start on 376th

CAPE MAY - This historic city will celebrate the 375th Anniversary of its discovery by Sir Henfy Hudson in 1609 on Saturday. v Day-long activities sponsored by the city and the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May will include a 4.4 mile Beachfront Run, the Kiwanis Pet Parade, a concert by the H.B. Smith Cornet Band, a cake-cutting ceremony featuring a 375 pound cake, dedication of a plaque, presentation of awards for the Cape May Star and Wave Photograph Contest and a Community Square Dance. ' THE BEACHFRONT Run will commence the activities with the infamous Captain Davey Kidd starting an anticipated field of 200 runners at 9 a.m.- Convention Hall. mediately following the race. At noon from the Madison Avenue Water Tower the Cape May Kiwanis Club will step off its Annual Pet Parade. Judging win begin at the Water Tower at 10:30 a.m. and all participating pet owners and their pets are urged to report on time, as awards will be presented prior to the parade, • IN ADDITION to 100-plus pet entries this year's procession wiU be enhanced by the Wildwood String Band, the Doctors of Rhythm Dixieland Band aboard the M.A.C. TroUey, 1964 Tulip Festival Queen Colleen Sheehan, Miss Cape MayCounty Catherine Adams, National Guard Command 154, Captain Kidd, the Cape May Fire Department, the Cape May Rescue Squad, the Cape May Police Department and 1984 Queen Maysea Denise Michelle Dwyer. Classes Set In Cooking

CAPE MAY - Culinaryclasses wiU be offered for the first time in the city's FaU Recreation Schedule. The registrant will have a choice between taking the Comprehensive Course, which win include classes in Baking, Low Fat Gourmet, Northern Italian, Thai Cooking and Bread Baking, or choosing any of the aforementioned classes. The culinary classes will be conducted the Perry Street Bake s, 428 W. Perry St., and will begin Oct. 16. Classes wiU be conducted Tuesday and-. Wednesday evenings 8 to 10 \ p.m. For further information, contact the Department of Civic Affairs at 884-8411, ext. 20 or 27.

The parade route begins at Madison Avenue and Washington Street, travels Washington Street to Ocean Street, then loops the Mall bpck to Ocean Street and "returns to the Water Tower via Columbia Avenue. Attention will then shift to the Rotary Bandstand following the parade as the H.B. Smith Cornet Band and vocalist Winfred Detore perform a concert beginning at 2 p.m. A FORMAL ceremony, presided over by city and local Chamber of Commerce officials at 4 p.m. from the Bandstand, will include a 375-pound cake, the dedication of a plaque and the presentation of awards to the photograph contest winners. The 375th Anniversary Celebration will then do*ido its way into the night with a Community Square Dance 8-11 p.m. at Convention Hall. Jim Hendrix and the Bayshore Squares will do the trailing arnd demonstrate the proper steps and movements throughout the evening.
