Dear Ruth: Please send me your diet. If it works, I promise to let you know. I need to lose 15 pounds. M.K., Cape May. Dear MK: I must explain to you first of all that my diet probably would not work for you, just as yours would not work for others. Your diet should be individualized to suit your life style needs. The one thing certain about diets is that nutritional food, in weighed and measured amounts, will help take off weight while maintaining good health. '■ You must choose foods for a chemical balance in your . system in the quantity which makes you perform b. efficiently. I IT REALLY is not difficult. It can even be fun. I You have already decided £ how much weight you want to lose, 15 pounds. That ~ should be fairly simple. i t However, just losing the _j weight is not enough; you want to remain at that I lower weight. That calls for choosing a food plan that you will be able to live with, forever if necessary. In trying to figure your I calorie intake, a rule of thumb is to multiply your desired weight by 10. that will give you the approximate daily number of calories. For instance, if you are aiming for 130 pounds, your calorie intake I would be 1300. Less than 1 1,200 calories is not safe 1 because you may not be I getting the proper I nutrients. ANOTHER WORD of I caution — don't try to lose I weight too fast. Your ] system may be damaged I by losing body fluids or I muscle. When you finally arrive at your desired weight, you can begin to add more calories to your diet because you don't want to keep losing weight, but be guided by the scale. I won't go into detail in this column about individual diets. You will find many good books on diets and calorie-counting at your local library. Many of the magazines at the supermarket checkout offer diet plans. Most of our cookbooks I now contain a section on I nutrition and the basic food I groups. And your doctor I will be able to provide you I with information on a proI per diet — you should check with him first in any event to be on the safe side. THIS MAY seem like too much work when you're only 15 pounds overweight but obesity has an insidious way of creeping up on us and we must do something about the 15 pounds before it becomes 30. As we get older, we usually a^e much less active^siMve cannot continue to-eat the same amount of food we have been, used to

eating. Developing a diet regimen of nutritious food in correct proportions is necessary for good health. Finally, in addition to cutting back oh food intake, unless you are physically impaired, you should exercise. Brisk walking, bike riding, even raking leaves, etc.. on a daily basis, all help to bum off calories. (One pound of body fat is 3,500 stored calories! ) TTiisW physical activity will help speed up your weight loss and give you more energy. Good Luck. Dear Ruth; I^need help on a diet program while on vacation here at the shore. Thank You. I.M., Phila. Dear IM: Many visitors ' have a difficult time planning their food consumption while on vacation. Meals are spontaneous events, fitted between all the other exciting happenings that are a part of a holiday. BUT THOSE OF us who are overweight cannot afford a vacation from our food programs. Just as in "Lost Weekend," a vacation food binge doesn't enhance our memories, instead it obliterates them. Gaining extra weight on vacation makes for a letdown when we get back home. We don't need that extra struggle to get rid of it. Here are. some suggestions you n^ht try to help curb your appetite. If you dine out frequently, choose a restaurant which features a salad bar or specializes in low calorie foods, such as Oriental cuisine. ■^Eat some carrot or celery sticks, or chew on some un buttered popcorn before dinner. This takes the edge off your appetite. And eat slowly ; less food is more satisfying if you take longer to eat it. So enjoy what our seashore area has to offer — the sun, the beaches, the fun and relaxation, but don't overindulge in food. If you would like help getting started on a diet program. write ■ to Ruth A. W a n b e r g , c/o this newspaper. Box 430. Cape May Court House. NJ 08210. Be sure to enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope if you want a personal reply.
