Chesley has distinguished herself as a Victorian artist who is capable of getting beneath the surface of a turn of the century setting. Those wbo view her interiors feel like invited guests in these warmly lit, comfortable rooms. THIS STYLE of using light and color over detail has enabled her to move emotion into her work. The

viewer is a participant in the feeling behind each p»ece.s This ability is a culmination of years of growing. In 1964 she attended the mo6t formal of her training, a 10-week course at massachusetts' Decordova Museum. Development after that was mostly due to circumstances. During a fouryear stay in Norway, where her husband was stationed with the Army, Jacqueline began doing landscapes While working with a sketch group she met Herman Bendixen, a local naturalist painter. WITH HIS encouragement and following the trend Jn Norway, she brought out more of her feelings and involvement with the vistas she was putting to canvas. Back in New Jersey she found the work of contemporary landscape ) artist, Wolfe Kahn. , Attending a threeday workshop offered by him increased her feeling fa- color. Under his guidance she was compelled to find alternates fa- colors, such as pastel green, which has no similarity to greens found in nature. This discovery opened the door for color experimentation that allowed emotion to flow freely.
