Cape May County Health Department News By LOUIS J. LAMANNA, Public Health Coordinator
COURT HOUSE - The County Council on Physical ^Fitness is sponsoring an aftqfnoon of "Family Fitness Fun" 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at the * County Park on Route 9, Rain date is Oct. 14. The events will include a one mile non-competitive "run for fun" at 1:15 p.m., and a one-mile family fun walk "at 2 p.m. There will also be free blood pressure checks and free balloons. This week I am going to digress from the activities of the County Health Department to discuss a topic of interest to all of us who are concerned about public health. I will talk to you about the role of physical fitness in healthy people and about the Cape May Ccinty Council on Physical Fitness. ! For more than a .gfeneration, American living has become increasingly sedentary. Most of us drive or ride to work and most other places. FOR MANY OF us work itself involves little, if any, vigorous physical activity. Even if our recreation many of us tend to be spectators rather than par- . ticipants. The relative lack of physical activity has led to a decline in physical fitness among youth and adults alike. However, of late, there has been a resurgence of interest in physical exercise and fitness. A 1977 Gallup Poll found nearly half of American adults saying that they exercise regularly to "keep fit. Millions participate in tennis, bicycling, swimming, calisthentics, and other forms of exercise. Runn- . ing. in particular, has become a very popular pastime. PHYSICAL FITNESS activities affect health in many ways. People who exercise regularly report that they, feel better, have more energy, often require less sleep. Regular exercisers often lose excess weight as well as improve muscular strength and flexibility. Many also experience psychological benefits including enhanced selfesteem, greater selfreliance, decreased anxiety and relief from mild depression. Moreover, many adept a more healthy life-style,
abandoning smoking, excessive drinking and poor nutritional habits. Sustained exercise improves the efficiency of the heart and increases the amount of oxygen the body can process in a given period of time. Compared to non-exercise people, those who engage in regular physical activity have been observed to have one and a half to two times lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease and even lower rise of sudden death. AEROBIC EXERCISE (exercise requiring large amounts of oxygen for energy production) has proved to be beneficial to the cardiovascular system. Exercise has proved to be helpful in controlling blood pressure, lowering serum cholesterol levels and reducing stress. A reasonable goal for any individual ought to be 15 to 30 minutes of exercise at least three times a week. A beginner should start slowly and people over 40 should be examined by a physician before beginning an exercise program. IN RECOGNITION of the value of keeping physically fit and knwoing that the majority of the population still needs to be encouraged . to pifcsue fitness, the Board of Chosen Freeholders in 1962, established the Cape May County Council on Physickl Fitness "to educate, promote and support fitness activities throughout Cape May County". That council is composed of interested citizens who give of their time voluntarily to achieve the goal set for the council. This year on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 1 p.m. in the County Park, the Cape May County Council will be sponsoring an afternoon for "Family Fitness Fun", from 1 :00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be a one-mile non-competitive "fun run" in the park at 1 : 15 p.m and that will be followed by a one-mile "family walk" throughout the park at 2 p.m. I urge you to come on out with your family, see your neighbors, and enjoy some mild exercise.
