Cape May Readies • To Go To Dickens

I CAPE MAY - All Dickens lovers are invited <4 to Cape May for the second annual "Dickens Ex- \ travaganza" to celebrate ' the coining of the Christmas season with the Raleigh, North Carolina Chapter of the international Dickens Fellowship. The Dickens Fellows from New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, and other parts of the country will be converging on this city where gingerbread architecture and Victorian finery have earned designation as a National Historic Landmark. The extra naganza will start Sunday, Dec. 2, and the four-day event will serve as a festive introduction to the Christmas HOSTING THE Dickens Extravaganza will be five of Cape May's best known bed-and-breakfast inns, all restored and furnished in antiques and within a few blocks of each other in the center of the Historic District. The highlight of the extravaganza will be a seven course Dickensean feast to be held at Alexander's, a nationally acclaimed gourmet restaurant and one of the five hosting inns. The inns are all known for the extra effort they put into the Christmas season, each decorating according to a particular seasonal theme. The Brass Bed. for example celebrates a child's Christmas, whereas Captain Mey's Inn documents Dutch traditions. THE QUEEN Victoria has done extensive research into the development of Victorian Yuletide traditions, decorating three trees, each" in a completely different 19th-cen-tury period, and The Victorian Rose, as its name implies, concentrates on some of the floral aspects of Christmas traditions. The Dickens Fellows will also participate in lectures, readings and discourses led by Professor Elliot Engel of North Carolina State University. Dr. Engel is an exciting and engaging speaker whose zeal and enthusiasm approaches that of Boz himself. As a Woodrow Wilson

fellow at UCLA, he won the university's outstanding teacher award. Many of last year's extravaganza attendees have alreadyreserved again for this year's round of talks and merriment because of the enthusiasm about Dickens which Professor Engel generates. THE LECTURES and discussions will be brought to- life by his. Kaeren Ha wkes worth, an actress whose roles have ranged from characters by Shakespeare, Dickens and Moliere to contemporary musicals. Kaeren will do her readings in costume, and will also be giving a talk and demonstration about Dickensean dress. Ms. Hawkesworth will also be assisting Dr. Engel in a special talk abouUthe secret life of Queen Victoria. Other talks will discuss little known but fascinating influences of Dickens' life and how they affected his writing as well as how his pen shaped the Victorian era and has affected modern times. Cape May is a perfect setting for the extravaganza as a national Historic Landmark and its status as the nation's first seaside resort. The city boasts the largest number of quality country inns of any city in the country. The shopping district is alive at Christmas, but unlike the malls there are many craftsmen and the shopkeepers are all small proprietors. ALTHOUGH Cape May is thriving in the summer, it has the longest season of any eastern seaside resort, and in December this living museum with its many fine inns, restaurants and shops takes on a friendly villagelike atmosphere. The summer crowds are long gone and the neighbors concentrate on decorating their houses and fixing a wassail bowl for the carollers. Dickenseans can't travel to 19th Century England, but Cape May, in its own way, will be giving the Dickens fellows and their friends a treat that would make Boz proud. Reservations -can be made by calling any of the participating inns, or for further information call 884-8702.
