Screening For Oral Cancer Set '"COURT HOUSE - Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital is cooperating with the American Cancer Society and the New Jersey Dental Association to provide a free oral cancer screening Oct. 17. Exams will be done at the hospital fiom 9 a.m. to 12 noon by Harvey Strair, D.M.D., of Court House. To take advantage of this free testing program, first call 886-1 154 for an appointment. then come to Conference Room 3 on the ground floor of the hospital. Tests involve a thorough but painless examination of the mouth that can alert the individual to a serious health threat. With early detection, oral cancer is almost always curable.

Boy Scouts Mark Anniversary
UPPER TOWNSHIP - The 40th anniversary of Boy Scouting in Tuckahoe will be celebrated with a roast beef dinner to. be served 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct.6, at the American Legion Hall. Raymond A. Young is chef for the -traditional dinner, which will be served
by members of Boy Scout Troop 55 and will serve as master of ceremonies, for the program OLD UNIFORMS, badge sashes, commemorative patches, camp cook kits, scrapbooks. pictures, and memorabilia are being sought for display. Though there was scouting in Tachahoe prior to the 40s. Lester F. Thorn organized Troop 55 there in 1943. and it has been active ever since. Several of its members have become Eagle Scouts, and recently the troop had four Eagle Scouts in its membership at one time. JOHN ROSE Jr. was the recipient this spring of Vigil Honors at Order of arrow ceremonies of the Apatukew Lodge 107, an honor which one in 50 receives.
There is also a Cub Scout Pack 55 for boys 8-12. It receives members from Tuckahoe, Petersburg, Corbin City, and Head of the River.
'Commended Student' v Named COURT HOUSE - John J. McVey, principal of Middle Township High School, has announced that Thomas S. Leonard placed in the top five percent of over one million participants in the 30th annual merit scholarship competition and will receive a Letter of Commendation in honor of outstanding promise for future acadmeic success. . An officer of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which administers the program, stated that. "The exceptionally high test performance of young people who are named Commended Students in the extremely competitwe Merit Program is\ deserving of recognition in their communities. To acknowiege the attainments of academically talented students and to credit schools for the part they j)lay in the development of these youths are important in a nation that values excellence." According to David G. Blood, participants entered the current Merit Program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT in the fall of 1983, when most of them were juniors. Although the qualifying test scores of the 35.000 Commended Students designated nationwide were very high, they were slightly below the level required for Semi-finalist standing in the competition for some 5,500 Merit Scholarships to be awarded in 1985.
Child Abuse Discussed NORTH CAPE MAY - .- Chuck Heddemasrv of the Division of Youth and Family Services spoke on child abuse and foster family care in Cape May County at the recent meeting of Delta Nu sorority. V The meeting was at the home here of the president, Marge Panny. A trip to the Philadelphia Zoo is planned for Oct. 21.
