In my first column, I wrote briefly about "High Level Wellness". In that discussion. I stated that High Level Wellness meant more than just absence of disease or illness. Wellness is a postiive state of health. Perhaps describing wellness may be more beneficial than trying to define it. Some experts would state it this way:- "If you can get right out of bed in the morning feeling ready to meet the day's activities, go through the daydoing everything you have to do without becoming tired or upset, get at least one hour of exercise and have enough energy left to meet whatever unexpected emergency that may arise and then at the end of the ^ day be able to go to bed and fall peacefully asleep without tossing and turning, you have probablyachieved a state of high level wellness." NOW THAT I have given you an idea of what highlevel wellness entails, 1 must tell you that attaining this healthy state is your responsibility. Achieving and maintaining good health is not something that your doctor or your government can accomplish for you. The responsibility for your own good health belongs to you. Up until recent times the major causes of death were communicable diseases such as typhoid, diphtheria, TB, and polio^ The threat from these diseases has been drastically reduced by modern medicine and by better public health practices. The combination of better sanitary conditions and modem medical miracles such as immunication and antibiotics has greatly reduced illness and death from these formerly dreaded diseases. TODAY. MORE people die of heart disease, cancer, and other life-style related ailments linked to the way we live, our exercise and safety habits, what we eat, whether or not we smoke and how we handle every day stress. A UCLA study indicates that attention to diet and regular exercise combined with abstention from smoking and the drinking of alcoholic beverges are significant factors in preventing disease. The

seven factors found by the UCLA study to be related to longer life expectency and good health are: 1. Three meals a day and no smoking. 2. Breakfast everj- day. 3. Moderate exercise two to three times a week. 4 Adequate sleep 5. No smoking 6. Moderate weight. 7. No alcohol, or only in moderation. RESEARCHERS have concluded that a 40-year old man who practices at least six of these life style habits can increase his lifeexpectancy by 11 years. Of all the life style habits that affect health, the most important is cigarette smoking. It is consider kl by medical professionals to be the largest single preventable cause of illness and premature death. Smokers have a 70 percent greater death rate from all causes than nonsmokers and they are two to three times as likely to die from a heart attack. People who smoke have a 25 times greater chance of lung cancer and an increased risk of lip. mouth, pancreas. and bladder cancer ANOTHER MAJOR factor in the state of our health is obesity. Forty percent of the adults in the United States are 20 or more pounds overweight and 20 percent of the nation's children are classified as obese. Obesity contributes to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and certain bone and joint disorders. The use of alcohol can be dangerous and addictive. Ten million adults are estimated to be alcoholics or problem drinkers. Alcohol abuse is linked to liver cancer and cirrhosis, and can damage the brain, the spinal cord and stomach. Our eating habits play a large part in determining how healthy we will be Too much saturated fat is linked to heart disease, high blood pressure, and increased risk of breast and colon cancer. TOO MUCH SALT is one factor in high blood pressure, a major cause of stroke, and too much sugar is a major cause of tooth decay. Last week, J talketebout the benefits of exercise and I would just repeat here that regular exercise is a key to preventing heart disease. Further, people who exercise are likely to adopt other aspects of a healthy life style. Dr. William Nolan, in speaking of American health habits, says, "'We would all like to have perfect health but only under certain conditions. To achieve it, we don't want to give up cigarettes, stop drinking alcohol, and drive under 55 miles per hour. We all want perfect health, but only if we can have it without making too many sacrifices." The o*!y way to achieve high level wellness, is to take personal responsibility for your own health.
