_ Dear Rulh: I am writing for my sister. She weighs 250 pounds. I wish you wuld help her. She lost weight four years ago and looked terrific, but she had a physical setback and put the weight back on. We are going on a trip soon and I know she would appreciate your help. — Sis Dear Sis: I admire your honest concern for your sister and her state of health. Unfortunately, as much as you might want to iiiuvii QJ uiu iiiigui nam IU

help, unless she recognizes the fact that she NEEDS help and WANTS help, there is riot much you can. do except .hope and pray that she will seek help. YOUR LETTER indicates. though, that your sister might be willing to try to take off some weight if for no other reason than to more thoroughly enjoy the upcoming vacation That's perfect. We all have to be motivated in order to reduce our bulk HOW we do it is" really up to the individual. The "reward" method works for- some, i.e.. for every pound taken off a "token" is given. These "tokens" can be traded in for gifts, family services, or even money. You could work it this way. Since you are planning a trip this fall. e i n t h e rewards specifically to your excursion. When she achieves her goal of losing an agreed number of pounds, you might treat her to a sauna, or a make-over, or something special she would enjoy while on vacation. Fun things work. FOR HER part, * your „ sister should set a realistic goal of losing a pound or so a week, keeping in mind that weight loss is NOT consistent. Some weeks nothing registers, but others will show, much more promise. Another approach, ac-' cording to California psychologist John Bear, is the negative approach. Bear is the author of "The Blackmail Diet". He claims it is the only diet that works for him because it forces him to stay on it. Bear decided to takeoff weight. His plan involved creating a situation in which the consequences of straying for the diet would be so severe that he was forced to stay with it. HE PUT S5.000 in an unbreakable trust fund, with the stipulation that if he failed to take off his excess weight by a certain date he would forfeit the money and it would be given to a "hate" group His method was drastic - if he failed to lose the Stipulation poundage. or if he gained or even maintained his weight, then he lost a considerably amount of money' to a most undesirable group of people. But this approach worked for him. He shed 76 pounds in one year! These are but two examples of motivation. The first offers rewards for losing weight; the second, punishment for not losing. Play with the idea and try to think of an approach. You may come up with the perfect motivation for your dear sister and both of you will be happier for it. Enjoy your Vacation.
