HISTORIC VICTORIAN CAFE MAY : CELEBRATES IT'S HERITAGE

By Libby Demp Forrest BENEATH lay the Victorian City, shimmering in autumnal sunshine. A swift breeze whistled through the jeweled foliage as my gaze swept over the gingerbread rooftops, and beyond, the foamy crests of the Atlantic Ocean. That view from the tower roof of The Abbey, at Columbia and Gurney Street stands out in my mind as the most impressive panorama of Cape May I've yet experienced. Another time I was treated to an airborne view of Cape May in a four-seater Piper out of Cape May County Airport, gliding over the Victorian City as a seagull might near dinnertime. My favorite perspective of Cape May is aboard the Cape May-Lewes ferry as it moves through the Delaware Bay, coax-

ing the eye toward the gothic village just beyond the seascape. DURING Victorian Week October 5 through. 14 sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC) natives as well as visitors will share a panorama of Cape May life and history never quite seen before in the Victorian City. The fall celebration will include special events ranging from a Convention Hall square dance to elegant Victorian din-

ners, restoration workshops featuring nationally known experts, walking and trolley tours, special interior house tours GuL-cPBS h<>USe 3' Cape May 00351 Those of us who love Cape May views whether atop a Victorian mansion, through the windows of a handsome guest house, strolling along -the town sidewalks or aboard the USCGC Alert and Hornbeam, will find much to enjoy during this festive celebration. AS WE STROLL and ride through Cape May during the special events, the senses will be open to the seasonal colors and sights, architectural treasures and gemcolored Victorian fashions; the aroma of wood burning in fireplaces of Cape May homes, wafting up through the town's brick chimneys during the Gaslit evenings of Victorian Week.
