Varied, Gala Fare On Victorian Week

CAPE MAY -r This Landmark CUy will welcome visits for the festive fall celebration called Victorian Week Friday through Oct. 14 with trolley fhd walking tours, fashion shows, lectures, parties, 'house tours, an antique show, and an in-depth wo£ft$hop ih Victorian /Bouse restoration using the / homes of the city as j examples. Victorian Week, sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC), is an expanded program based on the popular "Victorian Weekend" which has been held the past 10 years over Columbus Day Weekend in Cape May. IN ORDER to accommodate the increasingly

large numbers of visitors to the Victorian Village at that time, the festivities have been increased and spread over two weekends and the intervening week from Columbus Day Weekend, Oct. 5, through Oct 14. ' Special events scheduled for Victorian Week include an antiques show featuring over 50 quality dealers of Victorian Antique furniture and decorative arts on Friday and Saturday; a special crafts show, "Master Craftsmen in Crafts at Congress Hall; Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12 and 13; tours of Cape May's renowned Victorian homes' interiors Saturday and Sunday Oct. 6 and 7,

and the following Saturday, Oct. 13. Also, fashion « shows of Victorian costume with cocktail parties Saturday Oct. 6 and again Saturday, Oct. 13; the Baysbore Square Dance Festival Sunday Oct. 7, the annual "Glorious Victorian Dinner' featuring 4hefnusic of the H.B. Smith Cornet Band Saturday, Oct. 6; the popular tours of Cape May's stained glass Sunday, Oct. 7 and Saturday, Oct. 13; on open house at the Cape May Coast Guard Base, Monday, Oct. 8; "Song, Verse and Worse," a variety entertainment, Saturday, Oct. 13; and the Victorian house restoration workshop Monday. Oct. 8 through Friday, Oct. 12. In addition, there will be trolley and walking tours of the Victorian districts" of Cape May almost every day, special interior house tours — "Mansions by GaslighPN— Wednesday, Oct. 10, and "Cottages at Twilight" Tuesday, Oct. 9; a progressive reception at Cape Mayi's Victorian gue^ houses and bed-and-breakfast iiins Thursday, Oct. il/jspecial lectures by locafhistorians and experts throughout the week ; and showings of the movie on Cape May, "Victorian Capers", almost daily.

THE VICTORIAN House I Restoration Workshop, co- ^ sponsored by The OldHouse Journal magazine of restoration and maintenance techniques for the antique house, will feature lectures by nationally known experts on Victorian paint cblors, lighting devices, wallcoverings and fabrics, and gardens. There ^will be- panel discussions with the owners and contractors who have restored so many of Cape May's Victorian structures as well as tours showing the work in progress and completed throughout the town. There will be practical advice ranging from how to choose and supervise a contractor; to how to prepare and plan color placement for painting a Victorian building. With over 600 Victorian buildings in the village, Cape May is a perfect laboratory for anyone considering or in the process of restoring a Victorian structure. The homeowners and contractors of Cape Maywill show off their handiwork and collections, supplementing the lectures and discussions of the workshop. Advance reservations for accommodations in Cape May for Victorian Week are essential. However, of the events, only the Victorian House Restoration Workshop and the Glorious Victorian Dinner and Concert require registration in advance.
