Senate Bill Eases Rental Deposits

.TRENTON — Landlords of seasonal rental property would no longer have to place tenants' security deposits in interest bearing accounts under a bill sponsored by Sen. James R. Hurley, which passed the Senate recently. Hurley, R-Cape May, Cumberland, said, "The current law concerning inbearing accounts for security deposits was meant for tenants who rent for a year or more. It was designed to make sure the did not make a profit off the deposits. "If someone rents an apartment at the shore for . a week, the interest gained

on the security deposit would amount to onlya few cents. It is a waste of time and money for landlords to go through the paperwork and red tape of getting interest bearing accounts when so little interest would be returned to the shore tenant V Under the bill, seasonal rentals are defined as property rented for no more than 105 consecutive days. ~vj urge my colleagues to pass this bill so it can be enacted into law before a new summer season begins . There is enough red tape in the world without . creating more," Hurley said.
