Autumn At The Beach — The ldng white beach is deserted, Swept clean by winds from the sea and Only the hungry gulls remain To welcome the breakers and me; The sun no longer rudely glares Above the ocean's restful blue, But drowies in the autumn sky To reminisce the long day through. And though a melancholy note Hangs in the autumn atmosphere. With only gulls to welcome me, I love the beach this time of year; I love the restful quietness Found here along the lonely shore I find a strength in solitude To make my trembling faith secure. by Viney Endicott

; I'll tell you a secret. It's aggravating being married to a man who loves to sing first thing in the morning, a man who tells corny jokes even before the alarm dock rings It's a little embarrassing to have a neighbor tell me. "Your husband was up early today . wasn't he9 We heard him doing gospel in the bathroom " My greatest fear is that someday when we are out-of-town some motel keeper will have us thrown out because the other guests complain about The Hubby 's early morn ing serenade. a I have tried to tell The Hubby jhat not everyone awakens in a good mood. In fact, everyone in the household has tried to tell him There have been times we tried unilaterally in unison to make the point. THERE ARE MORNINGS when from every bedroom in the house we sound like the Waltons in reverse, instead of saying good-night to one another we are yelling and shouting and snarling at The Hubby. I have tried hiding my head under the pillow, but still The Hubby sings Broadway or Christmas carols in the ' shower oblivious to the rest of the household "Can I help it if I wake up happy?" The Hubby says while I sit in bed wringing my hands, wanting to wring his neck. 1 The one morning I threatened to leave him if be didn't stop the daily recital, he only laughed and went up an octave. #2 overheard me and dragged himself out of bed to stand in the doorway of my room. "You know you're not going to leave him. Mom," he said. "Nobody else would take you in." Then he turned and shuffled back to bed I CAN* ACCEPT singing in the shower if it goes on at reasonable hours such as seven or eight o'clock in the morning, but at 3 a.m. or 4 a.m. when The Hubby rises to get an early start for a business trip, the househoid lies unprepared for a musical assault. The Hubby even greets the darkness with "Good morn ing," while I ponder what kinds of stores wives can go to that sell muzzle-like devices for singing husbands The mornings when The Hubby not only sings, but goes through his repertoire of bottomless jokes, the household vents its steam by shouting out the punch lines first (We've already heard most of his jokes. ) "I don't think you jokes are funny," I growl while The Hubby prepares to go downstairs "How tan a beautiful woman be so grumpy in the morn ing?" The Hubby says as he kisses me goodbye
