The data is in, and we now have therpsults of the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or College Boards, for the crop of seniors in the class of *84 from high schools across the country. In the summary report issued by the Admissions Testing Program, these were the

highlights : , 1. The SAT scored have stabilized since reversing a steady decline that reached a low point in 1980 (from a high in 1967). 2. New Jersey scores are slightly below national norms in both math and verbal parts of the test, j: 3. Lower Cape May Regional High School's class of '84 (100 students were involved in the testing* scored higher than the sL.:e average in verbal but below the national and state norms in math. THESE ARE the numbers: National Mean Math -471; New Jersey 418; LCMR423. National Mean Math - 471; New Jersey 458, LCMR 447. What does all of this mean? Nothing very specific except that our youngsters who took this standardized test performed consistent with the average scores of students across the country Generally the performance was ^mediocre. There were roughly as many youngsters who did worse as there were who did better than our 100 participants. I know we can do better! WHENEVER TEST results are published there are always disclaimers that the test is not fair by those who do poorly. I thinly the SAT is fair. It does provide a service to college admissions by providing them with a valid barometer to measure how successful a student can be expected to be in college. * When those admissions people make a mistake they "must find a replacement for the student who drops out of college and this creates an economic void in the revenue of any college or university. Grade point averages are not as valid as the SAT. They have been going up while SAT scores were dropping, with the implication that grading has become easier across the country. Class rank is not always significant, since some schools are very much more demanding of their students thfin others. Thus the SAT. THIS TEST is not designed to measure character or loyalty. It is not written to assess potential or promise or personality. It is designed specifically to measure one youngster against another in academic performance in a standardized test so that colleges can

stratify their applicants, and although it does not rate or evaluate schools, the implications are clear. There is little comfort in knowing that th eyoungsters we are educating are performing in the middle of the pack,

but it would be ridiculoUS'to ignore the implication of the nationwide testing experience and the results our students have produced. Our teaching, our leadership, our efforts must improve. There are wonderful

young people inthis community. I think that their enthusiasm and general sense of decency is exceptional. It would be wonderful if that extraordinary' demeanor was reflected in their test scores. We will work on it.
