By Libby Demp Forrest TRADITIONAL COLUMBUS DAY will be observed this Friday. As time goes on, the old-fashioned way of celebrating significant days gets changed around. However, when we went to school, way back when, Columbus Day was celebrated on (October 12 no matter what day of the week it fell on. As school kids we always had talks about Columbus's discovery 01 the New World in 1492 when he landed at San Savador with his three ships, the Santa Maria, the Pinta and the Nina. ... . •••
Mother Nature is putting on a good 1 show for us this month. While we often dread the advent of winter, October has always seemed a buffer between seasons . Even tho the official start of winter isn't until December 21st, we all know the declining moments of sunshine signal thoughts of cold and chill and whipping • *■ October is one of the best months of the year for walking, especially the latter part of the month when there's a crispness in the air. We like to do our October walks around sunset, just a little before Standard Time goes into effect.
