Dear Ruth: I have just retired and moved to the beautiful Cape May area. I have always been overweight, but now I would like to loose some if ( if not all ) so as to be able to enjoy my retirement years to the fullest. There are just two of us. my husband and me, so I would like a food program that I can use without having to cook two different meals. "Newcomer" Dear Newcomer: Welcome to Cape May County. You are fortunate in coming here because so many services and activities have been established in our area by and for retirees. RETIREMENT has taken on a whole new meaning in the past decade People no longer retire to sit back and twiddle their thumbs. On the contrary, the majority of men and women who leave the workforce are vital individuals, ready to enjoy an active life and all it has to offer. I'm sure you are part of that group. Congratulations ! Since you are no longer involved in the rush-rush pace of the working world, this is an ideal time to tackle your lifelong problem of overweight. You will now have time to plan and prepare nutritious meals and you'll be able to sit down and enjoy them without the time clock die-, tating your hunger and its appeasement. ** JUST REMEMBER that a diet is not a food program for people in poor health. And a proper diet does not mean deprivation. It is more of a recognition of foods necessary for good health and elimination of foods that are unnecessary, or even harmful, to your system. Go to your local library and get several books on diets and nutrition. There
; are many and most of them i are easily read and full of [ sound information on our i bodily needs . Read through and select the ideas which appeal to both of you. MAKE UP a weekly menu using the foods you_ like, but in moderation. In I the beginning this may take a little extra time. Dut i once you get into the habit you will find it will simplify both your cooking and foodshopping time. There is nft need to cook "strange" things for yourself. Prepare simple, well-balanced meals for you and your husband. Now that he has retired, he will be less active than before and will therefore benefit from your diet also. ANOTHER TIP — to minimize time in the kitchen. prepare larger quan- « tities of food at one time and then freeze it in portions for two. < Do this after the food is cooked but before you sit down to eat so as to avoid the temptation of a second helping. Stews, soups and spaghetti sauces are simple to prepare and ideal for freezing. And there's no need to purchase a freezer if you don't have one; the freezinl compartment of most refrigerators has quite a bit of storage space Don't use that good space to store half-gallon containers of ice cream! / FINALLY, remain as acx tive as you can. Take walks and swim. Join some of the marvelous service centers which abound in our county and enjoy an active retirement. // you would like help in getting started with a diet program, ytrite to Ruth A Wanberg, c/o of this newspaper.
