MAYS LANDING - Atlantic Community College, its bold on Cape May County students threatened by competition from less expensive Cumberland County College, this week announced formation of a "Business Resource Center" to serve Atlantic and Cape May counties. "Hie Herald and Lantern had reported Aug. 22 that Cape May County, which pays a $66-per -credit-hour "chargeback" to Atlantic for Cape May County students, was considering a move to Cumberland, wbo6e chargeback is $29 per credit hour. / THE STUDENTS pay $29 per credit hour at Atlantic, $31 at Cumberland. Cape May County Benefit Set AVALON - The annual Kiddie Show, to include presentation of a puppet show, The Magical Tales of Hans Christian Anderson, by Pegasus Productions, will be held Saturday at Avalon Community Hall. originally was designated as being in the Cumberland "service delivery area," but that was changed to Atlantic in 1968 and the concept abolished several years age, leaving the students up for grabs. Atlantic maintains an extension center in Cape May Court House. Cumberland offers several courses at the vo-tech school in Crest Haven. Hie new resource center is intended to meet the growing training and development needs of Atlantic and Cape May County businesses, industries, governments and organizations, said Dr. Kenneth A. Yowell, vice president for academic and student affairs, who developed the program. "THE AREA'S economy has changed dramatically since the advent of gaming. Along with the gaming industry itself, there has been a significant ripple effect for local private enterprise," Yowell said. "All businesses are bonded by a common need: those with the best business skills are going to survive the competition and prosper. Whether it is food distribution, real estate, financial services or small business management, all can benefit from the services of the Business Resource Center. "As a community college, ACC is renewing its commitment to helping local businesses and industries meet current challenges. "An executive director for the center will be hired in December, with gradual
1 start-up of the center pro1 grams early in 1965," Yowell said. > GOALS OF the new center include: I — Providing training ; and educational services for area businesses and industries. — Delivering effective I long-range planning skills to organizations and communities trying to improve the quality of personal and business life in Atlantic and Cape May Counties. I — Assisting local industries, businesses, governments, organizations and individuals in becoming more productive. — Arranging educational ^Assessment and experience for individuals who desire expanded job opportunities and/or improved job performance. — Encouraging development of new business and industry in both counties. — Providing a high level of visibility for ACC, specifically to business and industry, on the college's mission, programs and services. YOWELL SAID the Business Resource Center would play an active role in assisting business and industry in identifying needs and then providing them with the services to meet those needs. For example, the center could help a firm determine the best type of employe development system and then contract to provide that service to the company. Cfrit-could provide services to counsel employes wanting information on
career opportunities, feedback on interests aqd activities, means of improving life satisfaction, or achieving job promotion or change. Another way in which the center will assist industry is by providing conference and communications capability through teleconference services, video access and video' training materials, Small businesses will be aided through the establishment of a consulting service staffed by a group of retired executives. THE RESOURCE Center will draw on facilities and staff college- wide, as well as contracted professionals from across the country. Its office will be located in the college's Atlantic city Extension Center, 1535 I Bacharach Blvd., which is i now undergoing a $4 million renovation to be ' completed in January. Plans for the Business Resource Center call for ,using the .Atlantic City facility to provide high j quality conference services ] for local businesses and industries. j 'While the Business ( Resource Center is a new t concept for the area, the j idea of developing a pro- ' gram tailored to a par- i ticular community consti- f tuency is not new at ACC. I In 1978, the college founded i the Casino Career In- J stitute, a school which this year trained its lOJJOOth \ person for a casino career. j ACC is the only communitycollege in the nation which I operates a casino gaming 1 school.
