' Beachfront Run Is Successful First
, CAPE MAY - The First Annual Beachfront Run sponsored by the City of Cape May covering a distance of 4.4 miles had a successful debut as it kicked off the Landmark City's 375th Anniversary Celebration.
Skating Program CAPE MAY - The 1964-85 Roller Skatin&Program conducted in Cape May Convention Hall will begin Friday! Oct. 19. David and Debbie Douglass will be back to coordinate the program for the third year. The hall will be open for skating through April 14, 1985 on Fridays 7-10 p.m.. Saturdays 1-3 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. and Sundays 1-3 p.m. Skating parties will be limited to the 1-3 p.m., Saturday session. Interested non-profit organizations can call the Civic Affairs Department at 884-841 1 to reserve dates.
In spite of threatening skies that forced the cancellation of the Kiwanis Pet Parade and relocation of the H.B. Smith Cornet Band Concert and cakecutting ceremonies inside Convention Hall, a throng of 125 runners raced off as scheduled at the command of Cape May's Captain Davey Kidd. Included in the field was the thirty-four member Regimental Running Unit from the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May. THE EVENT was so well received that the city plans to expand and improve the race to see who can breeze up and down the beachfront the fastest to include age division awards and a postrace reception. Official first time record holders of the 4.4 mile beachfront test are. this year's winners: TonyWilson, 29. of Vineland, with a time of 24 minutes, and Mary Dougherty, 42. of
Cape May, with a time of 32 minutes and 31 seconds. In the Women's Division, Susan Marshall, 38, of Cherry Hill, took the second place trophy with a time of 33 minutes and 12 seconds and Kathleen Finneran, 39, of Lower Township, took third in 33 minutes 46 seconds. PHILIP TAMA, 38, from Brooklyn, N.Y., captured second in the men's division in 24 minutes 57 seconds and Stephen Osmer, 33, from Erma. grabbed third in a time of 25 minutes 16 seconds. Specif thanks were extended to John Bailey and the Baileywicke finish-line crew of Nancy Bailey, Aubrey Johnson, Gus Correal, Bob and Barb Allison, Rob Willis and Marie Willis for their assistance with
the planning and coordination of this race. Volleyball "Clinic On VILLAS - The City of Cape May and the Lower Township Recreation Department will cosponsor a Coed Volleyball Clinic 6-9 p.m. Sunday at the Lower Township Recreation Center on Bay shore Road, here. The clinic will be conducted by Kay Corcoran, -head women's volleyball coach at Temple University, and several of her varsity players. For further information contact the Department of Civic Affairs at 884-8411, ext. 20 or 27. Applications can be picked up at the Lower Township Recreation Center, Baysbore Road, Villas, or Cape May Convention Hall.
Chamber's Tourney On COURT HOUSE - The 1984 Fall Open Golf Tournament sponsored by the County Chamber of Commerce was to be held today at the Stone Harbor Golf Club. The tournament was slated to start at 9 a.m. An awards luncheon was to follow the 18 boles of golf. Twelve attractive trophies were to be awarded after the buffet luncheon.
Schools Open PALERMO - The restored Friendship school, dating back to 1830, is nowopen to the public free 1-4 p.m. Sundays. The school, at Ocean Avenue and Shore Road, was restored by the Upper Township Historical Preservation society.
