! Time for Checking Heating Systems

FOLSOM — South Jersey Gas Co. encourages residential customers to check home heating systems to assure proper operation before the winter heating season begins. Several maintenance procedures are suggested by the utility which can reduce the inconvenience and discomfort of heater breakdowns during the upcoming months. Most natural gas heating units will operate smoothly by performing the following maintenance checks : If the pilot light on your gas heating system remained on during the summer months, turn the house thermostat above room temperature to make sure the heater comes on. If the pilot is off, follow the

' lighting instructions that ; are normally posted on the t unit or found in the < manufacturer's operating manual IF YOUR gas heating system will not start, check all fuses and circuit I breakers and make sure all i switches near the house heater are in the ON position. If you have a warm air heating system,' check to see if the fan motor (or hlower) is running. It usually takes a few minutes before the automatic blower starts. Check your heating ducts for cracks, holes or separations at joints, and if necessary, repair the leaks with duct tape. Change the air filter(s) in yohr heating system, or clean it if you have a permanent type. Also, . periodically oil the fan and \ motor \ bearings if recom\mended by the I manufacturer. C — If'you have a hot water heating system, make sure the circulating pump is operating. If you find any water leaks, call your local plumber. The monthly vacuuming of all surfaces of your radiators, including hard-to-reach places, xwill help the heating system operate more effectively. CHECK THE registers or radiators in each room of the house to make sure you are getting heat. If the heating system still does not operate after these checks have been made, turn back the house thermostat and call South Jersey Gas for service. Tow-free numbers for customer service are listed on the back of monthly gas bills. South Jersey Gas serves 162.000 customers in a seven-county region which includes all of Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Salem counties, and portions of Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties. i
