AVALON — The Federal Green Thumb Program, which has little to do with gardening, has nonetheless brought a harvest of % satisfaction at Borough Hall here. "It (the program) has been a great asset to us." said Andrew Bednarek. borough administrator "I am very pleased with the work done by our Green Thumb employe." declared Peg Peterson, tax collector. ELICITING the praise was Lorraine Olsen, who is working in the borough tax collector's office under the program. Mrs. Olsen works correcting tax bills, compiling in- • terest. processing water ^ and sewer bills, a/id 0 posting A senior citizen, she had been .out of the work force Tor years when she met the Cape May County leader for the Green Thumb Program, Joe Larkin. Larkin and Stephen Cesare, area supervisor, interviewed Mrs. Olsen and found that - her circumstances as a widow living alorfe in the Villas with an annual income under $6,225 qualified her for the program. Avalon heard of the program th,rough Sea Isle City, became a host city, and was assigned its first Green Thumb employe. __ Mrs. Olsen. ALL CONCERNED expressed themselves as happy about that. The Green Thumb Program began in 1965 under the Older Americans' Act to supplement the meager retirement pensions .of older Americans. This program is sponsored by the National Farmer's Union and is funded by The Department of Labor It is a temporary pro- i gram for senior citizens | where their varied talents or skills permit them to work not over 1300 hours per year earning $3.35 per hour. The program pro- ! vides for on the job training ! and eventual placement in- [ to (fee regular job market The title "Green Thumb-' ' came about at the onset of
the program under President Johnson when it was felt that senior citizens might get ivolved in the First Lady's beautification program under this act. The program branched out into office skills, parks, recreation and the like. OVER 700 seniors are enrolled in New Jersey which was one of the first four states to become in-
volved in 1965. The average Green Thumb employee in the state is 70 years old and the oldest is 94, with 15 per cent of those enrolled being placed in the labor market afterward. Cesare is himself retired from the N.J. Employment Service Department and covers Cape Ma v. Cumberland and Salem Counties.
