Seeing Eye Puppy Plan Will Be Told

COURT HOUSE - Seeing Eye Inc. and Cape * May County 4-H will hold an open 4-H Seeing Eye Dog meeting. Oct. 24 for anyone in the process of raising a puppy, interested in raising a puppy, or the program itself. The meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Cooperative Extension Service Educational Center, Dennis ville Road. Rt. 657 Gail Phillips. Seeing Eye Placement Coordinator and Louise Talarek, 4-H Program Associate, will explain* the program, plan activities, and demonstrate

training techniques with Seeing Eye dogs presenting in the county. SEEING EYE furnishes the dogs, the instructors and the training that brings freedom of mobility to blind people. The 4-H organization provides homes for Seeing Eye puppies during the critical first years of their lives. The one obligation is that the person in charge of the dog (adult or 4-H'er) must take the dog to 4-H meetings for training instructions. This also provides the dogs with experiences in travel and association with other people and dogs DURING THE first year, the dog is expected to be housebroken and learn a few basic commands. An allotment is made for the dogs' food and Seeing Eye pays for any veterinary bills that are incurred. The puppies are German Shepherds, Labrador's, and Golden Retrievers. They are bred at the Seeing Eye puppy farm near Mendham. When the puppies are eight weeks old they are put in 4-H homes where they remain for about a year. After that time they are returned to Seeing Eye for three months of intensive training with a professional dog trainer.
