^ From The Principal By Stanley Kotzen Principal, Lower Cape May Regional High School
Saturday is Homecoming. Next Tuesday is Back-to-School Night. The push is on to get the adults in the community involved in their High School. These two events of course are typical Fall rituals, and each has its share of theatrics and glamour, but the purpose is very basic: We want the parents and taxpayers tp come to the school that they support so that they can feel a part of the process that provides formal education for their children. The hoopla of Homecoming is real show biz. There is the Band, the cheerleaders, the floats, the queen and her court, and the game. It is yards of school color ribbon and cartons of mums. It is jumping and screaming as winners are announced and touchdowns are scored. But most of all it is kids. Youngsters who have worked hard on a float or a poster, and it's that look of pride that they take in their class or club entry in a competition. All the noise and the color get interpreted in the expressions on the faces of these young people to whom this is a very special day. This is Homecoming - Hie memory of what it was like to be so young and alive whether it was at Lower Cape May Regional or at any of the thousands of schools in the country where this tradition lives. We want the
adults of this community to share that experience and I permit us to give you our I rendition of the recurring theme. Back To School Night is show and tell, Saturday morning inspection and a heavy dose of deja-vu. It is the time when the administration and the school board has the opportunity to publicly display the top of its product-line, the latest edition of the instruction your youngster receives, the heart and guts of the system - our teachers. Parents coiifte in and walk the halls and visit classrooms "Kicking The Tires" to check out the teachers they have been hearing about over the dinner table for the past six weeks (As a teacher - I remember vividly looking into the eyes of those parents trying to read their expressions or nonexpressions as a gauge of how I have been rated by my students during the start of the school year.) There is a ten minute period when each teacher makes his or her often lasting impressions on parents. . Invariably everyone feels good about the experience. Teachers enjoy meeting parents and discussing the job that they have selected as a career. At their best, our teachers, in a brief time, can convey the enthusiasm that they
have for their subject matter and each student. Parents invariably feel comforted to know that the staff is very professional, but they have difficulty adjusting to the fact that school desks get a little smaller each year. Homecoming and Back To School are great opportunities to make contact with your High School, but for a real picture come and see us on a regular working day.' See our staff and students in the daily routine of learning. Check into our office and walk the halls to see the process sans the embellishments and comeons. TJiere is enough drama in the daily life here to makq anyone feel good. \ Education is the life blood t>f any community and we invite you in for a transfusion whenever you reenhe need.
