Dear Ruth: Please send me some suggestions which will help me to get started on the diet. Send me the Do's and Don'ts. MLF. Dear MLF: I have received a number of ' letters requesting my "Thoughts and Suggestions on Taking Off Weight." I have chosen yours to answer in my column because of the slightly , different wording you used. You asked for help to get ' started on "THE" diet. I liked that because it seems more personal and almost committed, i.e., "THE" diet that I will live with, for better or worse, for the rest of my life. Whereas "a" I diet suggests one of a 1 number, something I insignificant that you will quit when you are bored : with it. i GENERALLY speaking, < there are some simple I guidelines which you 1 should follow. I have listed I them here. • When weighing or 1 measuring portions, a standard 8 oz. measuring i cup should be used, along i with a standard measuring teaspoon and tablespoon. < Don't "eyeball" it at first | because our guesses can be < very inaccurate. < • Use a postal or good ) kitchen scale. ( • All measurements ] should be level unless 1 otherwise specified. | • Most foods are i measured or weighed AFTER cooking. • MEATS SHOULD be I roasted, broiled or boiled (not fried). j J i i
• Vegetables should be prepared and eaten without adding fat (butter or margarine) or flour. • Use fresh fruit when possible, or canned without sugar. • Select salad dressing without sugar — or make your own. • Slow down mealtime. Don't eat-more than the pre-planned and measured amounts. • NO second helpings, 'please! Freeze leftovers. .1 HAVE BEEN urging my readers to examine the ingredients on food labels. This is especially true on items marked "diet," "light" or "lite". You may surprised at the number of calories some of these products contain. Also, in some instances, - some are higher in sodium content than their non-diet equivalent. And finally, of their "diet" these products may quite expensive. So don't be fooled by a misleading It takes only a few moments to check the contents. THE FEDERAL Trade Commission has issued a guide for * buying lowcalorie food. For a free copy of "Five Food Facts" write to the Federal Trade Commission, • 6th & Ave., N.W., Washington, DC 20580. This pamphlet contains useful information for dieters. Don't delay; start "THE" diet today and plan to stay with it. Good Luck! If you would like help in getting started with, a diet p-rogram, write to Ruth A. Wanberg, c/o this newspaper, Box 430, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210. Be sure to enclose a stamped self -addressed envelope if you want a personal reply.
