Club Plays In Va.

DEL HAVEN - Four Cape Express Soccer Gub teams traveled Columbus Day weekend to Sterling,. Va., to participate in the Mid-Atlantic Columbus Day Soccer Tournament. According- to the tournament book, there were more than 100 teams of all age divisions (some 24 teams per division). All teams were guaranteed a minimum of 4 games — not counting finals. * Tournament records for the Express teams were: Ed Fretz's Midnight Special, 0-4, Eld Murphy's Golden Flyer, 0-3-1, Ken Kirsch's Silver Streak, 1-3. Q V

Wally Porter's Rovers, under 14, finished tournament play with an undefeated 4-0 record only to be upset inv the semifinals by Greensboro, N.C., in a beautiful spectator game which showed the expert maneuverability and ball-control these young players, on both teams, posses. Our local youth, from all the teams, returned home not only with the Rover's runner-up trophies but, just as importantly, with a mindful of new soccer knowledge and techniques along with the memories of all the super new friends that were made.

Climbs Summit

DEL HAVEN - Two weeks ago state cup soccer games began. They are single eliminations, cutting the number of teams participating in half each weekend. The Express Midnight Special (under 14), coached by Ed Fretz, was eliminated during first round play against East Brunswick, while Ken Kirsch's Silver Streak traveled to Summit, NJ., and knocked out the home team 6-L Wally Porter's under 14 Rovers received an automatic first round vic-

tory through a 'bye (league drawn decision)." Last weekend's second round for the Express, played on its Fields in Del Haven, pitted the Silver Streak against Union, N J., whose superb ball skills ended our local youth's chances to further compete Meanwhile, the Rovers retained their winning ways with a 2-1 victory over East Brunswick. At press time it was still not known where the Rovers would have to travel to meet their qext challengers Saturday.
