Bell Urges Action On LADT Service

New Jersey Bell has an exciting new service waiting in the wings that promises to bring down the cost of home computing and revolutionize business data communications. It's called Local Area Data Transport (LADT). The new data network uses a technology called

packet switching that per mis many users to share common facilities, dramatically reducing the cast to individual residence and business customers. Packet switching .packages" blocks of data . and intersperses them over v a single telephone line, taking advantage of idle transmission time between birstsof data. «NCE PACKAGED the electronic messages must be addressed and transmitted in electronic envelopes between different brands and types of computer equipment. These envelopes are known as protocols. But protocols vary, and most computers can't "talk" to other terminals Hnipr access mainframe computers without an expensive conversion device. The cost of such conversion devices easily can exceed U, 000, making them impractical for owners of inexpensive home computers and costly for businesses that must communicate daily with the remote data bases. WITH LADT. New Jersey Bell will have the

ability to convert protocols » within the switching network at a fraction of the » cost currently mandated ; by conversion devices. For example, one of New I Jersey's major institution i which now pays $250,000 p per month to transmit information between ter- ; minals and main comi puters could save $50,000 per month. » Why isn't New Jersey t Bell offering it? Several years ago the i FCC set down computer rules that must be waived to allow New Jersey Bell to offer LADT in the most efficient way. In May of this year, the company asked I the FCC to do just that. THE REQUEST has been formally supported by many of New Jersey's leaders in business and government. People like Borden Putnam, commissioner of Commerce and Economic Development, and George Barbour, . Board of Public Utilities Commissioner, realize that the new technology will give the state an edge in attracting and keeping businesses that depend so heavily on the ability to

• handle information rapidly , accurately and inexpensively. I TTiey recognize that using the telephone network more efficiently will reduce co6ts and ultimate- • ly benefit all telephone customers. More than four months have passed since New ' Jersey Bell filed for the FCC waiver. The company has responded to questions raised by the FCC and concerned parties and time has been provided for comment.

Calibration Plan Brings Car Saving

ERMA — A letter from Chief of County Detectives William B. Matthews Sr. to [Freeholder Wiliiam E. Sturm Jr., prompted action which resulted in the installation of a new Speedometer Calibra tion [System in the county's vehicle maintenance center at the County i Airport. According to Freeholder Sturm, Matthews wrote to him on behalf of the Cape May County Chiefs of Police Association requesting installation of the system to serve all the police departments in the j county. THE PROPOSAL was presented to the members of the board and they were

in unanimous agreement to fund this project," Sturm said. "The high co6t to each municipality individually contracting this service made a centrally located, county-wide service a practical and cost-effective step." Middle Township Police Chief Edward Hansen, who originally brought the idea , to the Chiefs of Police Association, said, "Prior to this installation it was costing us $23 per vehicle four times per year. I have 16 vehicles In my department alone and there are over 85 vehicles countywide, so you are talking about a lot of money. "Total cost of the system, including purchase, installation and training was $6,598. Calibrating the 85 vehicles, county wide, four times per year, would cost in excess of $7,800," Sturm safd.
