Fire Prevention Week at School

FIRE INSPECTION — Students Tony Fazio and Todd Rudden check out fire fighting equipment and turnout gear at observance of Fire Prevention Week at county vocational Career Center.

COURT HOUSE - Teachers at the vocational Career Center brought a- , personal approach to the I observance of Fire Prevention Week. In a series of activities developed from the teachers' own experiences, students learned how to save themselves and their | families in case of a fire in their homes. The activities began with a school-wide assembly presented by David Billig. Billig, who teaches the 6mall engine/marine I mechanics program, was a fire fighter for five years with the Pennsauken Fire Department. During the assembly, students learned how to develop a fire "preplan" with their families. FAMILIES WITH a fire pre-plan rehearse how ^ach family member will react u) case of a fire in the home. "Billig explained to students how to plan routes out of their homes: every family should choose a meeting place outside the home and select someone to account for all family members. After the assembly all students in the school were given a short quiz on fire safety and fire pre-plans. In a related activity, seventh and eighth grade students drew a plan of their own homes and designed escape routes. Instructors Jack Schwartz and Don Echevarria helped i each student develop a fire L pre-plan for his family. J Schwartz is a lieutenant lwith the Avalon Fire I Department. " "EVERY YEAR." Schwartz stated, "it seems that one or two of the students in our school have fires in their homes. If we can save just one life, all g our Fire Prevention Week V activities will be & worthwhile:" Schwartz also explained j the function of local fire companies to the seventh and eighth grades. He brought in a Scott Air-Pak and fire fighter turnout gear for the students to see during the discussion of how fire-fighters save lives. Instructor Echevarria said that the students responded enthusiastically to the fire safety program. "We also teach citizenship at this time, emphasizingtbe importance of fire I figmers and their role in the obmm unity," he said. The fire safety program is ijeld annually at the / Career Center.
