\ County Will Train Home Care Aides

^ TRENTONI Unemployed New } Jerseyans age 50 or older in a 12-county area will be » eligible for training as } homemaker/home health v aides under a new state ; health department; J demonstration program. * I Under a $70,000 grant to ' the state Department of Health from the UTS.

Public Health Service, the demonstration project, now in its second year, will be carried out in Cape MayCounty by the Jersey Cape Visiting Homemaker Service in the Social Services • Building. Rio Grande. For 1 information, call 886-8988. THE LOCAL home health care agencies in the 12 counties involved will

conduct the free training courses. The state Department of Health will then reimburse these local agencies to cover training costs. Homemaker/home health aides provide personal care and housekeeping services to persons and families with a medical problem. Services provid-

To be eligible to enroll in this, special training course, an applicant must be 50 or older, unemployed, in good health, able to read and write in English, and a resident of thel2-countv ito.ucm ui urciz -count v

area with no previous homemaker/health aide training. Both men and women are encouraged to apply. STATE HEALTH Com missioner Dr. J. Richard Goldstein said the objectives of the program are To increase the provision of needed homemaker services and decrease unemployment among senior citizens who are interested in remaining a part of the states workforce. The 12 counties were selected because of their high percentage of elderly and disabled residents, high unemployment rates, and/or low socio-economic status. IN MANY cases, noted Rickey Greene, coordinator of the health department's Gerontology Program, the provision of homemaker/home health aide services can prevent patients from being hospitalized or placed in a nursing home. Homemaker/home health aide services represent a cost-effective alternative to hospitalization and ihsti tutionaliza tion . Not only will this program continue to increase the pool of aides needed to serve this growing population, but it will provide able-bodied senior citizens with supplemental income, purposeful employment, and a heightened sense of self-worth. Greene added. The program, which began in March 1984, "was developed by the department in cooperation with the Home Care Council of New Jersey and the Home Health Agency Assembly of New Jersey. All who complete the course will be guaranteed full or parttime employment. During the first year of the training grant, six counties participated r
