<0^ From The Principal ' By Staiipy Kotzen ~ : " l^indpal, lower Cape May tepiooal High School
Denise Obst and Doug Patrick are seniors at Lower Cape May Regional High School, and Valerie Davis is one of our w . mathematics teachers. These three members of our school community share a very special accomplishment It is one of those feats of excellence that is achieved
quietly and without much notice, but one that we should not be aflowed to ignore. Since they entered LCMR they have all had perfect attendance. For Denise and Doug that is -since 1982; for Valerie it is since 1978. THERE USED to be awards for perfect attendance, but the practice ceased a long time ago, and I am not sure why. There is a crying need for it again. Public high schools have been mandated to enact at-„ tendance policies since it was discovered that students were graduating with diplomas earned when their attendance records were horrendous. So our focus was once again diverted to the "squeaky wheel", and we applied the oil. At best we have looked upon the negative aspects of attendance as demanding our attention. For a few minutes let us accentuate the positive. HOW WONDERFUL > it feels to respond to a prospective employer who calls the principal seeking "i a reference on a youngster when I can say "This student is completely reliable < and comes to school every ' day — on time". i
It is ooe of the most essential carry-over skill that we offer youngsters in school — the opportunity to build a record of reliability and responsibility. And what a great demonstration of persistence and commitment when someone can answer the bell every day. Tins is one of the most valued of performance traits — consistency. Everywhere we read of spectacular feats and great seasons enjoyed by athletes, but who can approach that awesome record of Lou Gehrig? He played in 2,130 consecutive games!! Who is not impressed by the fact that a student or teacher comes to school every day and does this over a period of several years? THINK OF ALL the times you woke up feeling a little sick, a little bred, a little fed-up, and decided to take off to recoup. For some of us this is necessary, but probably not as often as we use it for an excuse to miss work or - school. For Denise and Doug and Valerie this never happened. None of them are ex ceptional medical specimens, and each one
had the opportunity to "take a day", but somewhere along the line tbey resisted that temptation, and I think attention should be paid to their effort. From a purely economic perspective think _ of thet financial saving to a business that doesn't have to pay for absenteeism. What is the worth of an employee who is on the job every day? As radical as it may sound, I would like to see us put the attendance emphasis where it belongs, by rewarding students, teachers, and employees who don't use sick days. For those myopic few who assume that industry and schools would then be peopled by ailing workers, I would only respond wiuth the question. "What would you ever accomplish if you waited for the moment when you felt perfect ?" All of us need reminders occasionally of what is truly important in our lives. If is often easy to be diverted from the daily respon- - sibilities we all have by difficulties and inconveniences. But it is also comforting and encouraging to know that some of us resist those excuses and do the job all the time.
