For Trick and Tr eaters Halloween Goodies
By FLORENCE L.D. HEAL Soon we will be greeting the trick and treaters at the door. We will want to be prepared for their visit. Hobgoblins and ghosts, black cats and bright-eyed pumpkins all spell Halloween. Meaning hallowed or holy evening, this holidaytakes place immediately before All Saints' Day, originally an old world celebration. Hie Irish brought Halloween to America. With the I day itself, the Irish brought < many superstitions and I s y m b ql s ^ J h e j a c k i o'-laritern, sio the story < goes, comes from a man I named Jack who was i unable to enter heaven because of his miserliness Because he played practical jokes on the devil, he couldn't go to hell. So he was forced to walk the earth forever with his lantern. GHOSTS. FAIRIES, witches and spirits are Halloween traditions carried down to us by the Druids. These people thought that the spirits came out on Halloween to harm the peo-
ple. Similarly, ^Cats are symbolic of Halloween, > especially the all-black cats. Originally, they were thought to be reincarnations of humans! It is wise to have wrappings such as baggies, ^wax\ paper, or aluminum wrap handy for the trick and treaters so that they can keep their goodies in good condition until they get home. A few treats are as follows: CATS CRUNCH Mjti cups sugar Mi pound butter or oleo 4 cup white corn syrup 8 cups popcorn 1 cup pecan halves ^ cup slivered almonds Cook sugar, butter and syrup in 1 quart until light caramel color, 10-15 minutes, stirring constant-
