Dear Ruth: I need help to get started. I have been reading your column every week but I can't seem to get motivated. Help and Thanks. Dear H&T: Your act. of writing and asking for help is the beginning of motivation. It is part of human nature to procrastinate. We know we should do something about a problem but we put it off until tomorrow, hoping the problem will disappear. (It won't!) THAT'S WHERE motivation comes in. It is the key in making any change but it is especially important in successful weight control. Motivation will vary' with each individual, but something is needed to "set the spark" to get us going. For some, an upcoming
special event is enough to get us started. In the case of Christine Onassis, it was her fiance who urged her to take off almost 100 pounds before their wedding. That was the spark that worked for her. Vanity also helps. I have a good friend who easily shed 35 pounds before her upcoming 15th Class Reunion. Limiting her food intake was more comfortable than facing her foriher classmates at 150 pounds! SOMETIMES WHAT may seem very minor to others can be catastrophic enough to us and a successful change is allowed to occur as a result. For instance, a gift in your regular size from someone you love doesn't fit. You prefer to trim down rather than exchange for a larger size. It can even be a favorite skirt that binds at the waist. These events are part of everyday life and help keep us in shape (or make us willing to get back into shape). SO, ALTHOUGH motivation is a common I denominator in the process of taking off weight, each of us is emotionally distinct, and therefore the type and style of our approach will vary as much as the food plans we will adopt. However, a word of caution is in order. We must not spend an inordinate amount of time in planning how, or analyzing why. Although it is important to know ourselves, the ACTION we take is what brings results. I know a woman who has accumulated just about every so-called "good" cookbook that has been printed in the past 15 years. She subscribes to avant garde cuisine magazines, as well as many of those from various sections of the country, i.e.. New England, Creole, Southern, etc. YET, SHE NEVER COOKS A MEAL! She and her husband eat out every day! SHE IS REALLY a "collector". But mhny of us who need to lose vieight are guilty of tbe-^same thing. 'Many— of us have read all the touted books on I
diet. We leaf through numerous diet articles in magazines. We become addicted to talk shows whose guests expound on their approach to weight loss, their own special "secrets". Our newspapers offer help in diets. But it is we who have to take action. Knowing what to do is not enough. We must do it, and the right time is NOW. The correct place is HERE, and the best way to motivate ourselves is to willingly allow it to happen! Remember the old Chinese proverb, "The journey of a thousand miles starts with one step". If you need help getting started with a diet, write to Ruth A. Wanberg, c/o of this newspaper, PO Box 430, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210. Be sure to enclose a S.A.S.E for a personal reply. mmm
