Dorit Ward Photo PAYING FOR ITSELF — Instead of each town in Cape May County calibrating its own police car speedometers by farming the job out as has been the practice, that chore will now be done at the county's vehicle maintenance center. The 16,598 testing equipment should pay for itself within a year — not counting revenue from speeding tickets. Lower Township Police Sgt. Don Douglass, left, checks results with Henry Franchville of the county Road Department.

COURT HOUSE - The County road department has teamed up with the probation department in a new program code named "Buschwackers". Under this program, county residents required by the courts to perform community service in lieu of fines or confinement are working Saturdays and . i Sundays to remove litter ' along roads throughout the county. Assistant County Road Supervisor Ed Ayers, creator of the "Stowit" campaign, has beqn coordinating the program with Tom Naglee of the probation department. "I THINK it is a great program," Ayers said. "The county provides a vehicle and one supervisor and receives the services of

five to 10 workers in return. The program has been in effect for five weeks now and we are averaging between 75 and 100 bags of litter each weekend, which in itself provides the value of the program." * Tom Naglee, coordinator of the community service program for the probation department, said, "It gives us an excellent placement site for those who can do their community service work only on weekends. I have worked with the road department in the past placing people during the week and I am grateful for their cooperation. We are 100 percent behind the county antilitter program and glad to be able to provide manpower to help clean up our county."
