Our Readers Write Top Recycling In the County To The Editor: I feel compelled to answer the letter that appeared your Oct. 17 issue by Edward Rosenberg of Cape M< Court House. It disturbs me deeply that a resident of Midd Township, willing to participate in a voluntary recyclir program, would have a problem having his recylclab material removed from curbside. After reading the lette I contacted the superintendent of the Middle Townshi Public Works Department and had him complete a revie of the phone calls for the past five-six weeks. During th review we found no calls on record from Rosenberg nc anyone at that particular residence. • After a thorough review with the individuals that patri that area for recycling, we found that for the past fe' weeks no recyclable material has been at curbside in fror of the Rosenberg residence. TO VERIFY the effectiveness and willingness of th residents of Middle Township to participate in our recycling effort. I must further elaborate on the success of "our recycling program in Middle Township. During the first week of October, 1984. we passed the one million pound mark in recycling collected by our Public Works Department We have picked up over 372.000 pounds of newspaper, 204,000 pounds of cardboard, 149.000 pounds of glass, 14.600 pounds of aluminum and 328.000 pounds of scrap metal. In addition to selling these recyclables. we have prevented this 500 tons from being disposed of at the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Landfill. As you can see. the resdients of Middle Township are greatly involved in recycling. I will admit that as successful as our program is we are not without fault. It is possible that on any given Wednesday we may forget to pick up the recyclables at an individual's location or when a resident calls our Public Works Department we may have failed to note a call for proper followup. I DEEPLY APPRECIATE the fact that Rosenberg has taken the time to write a lettr to the editor concerning this problem. It has been immediately addressed and our Public Works Department will be more conscientious in its efforts to serve the public. I do hope that Rosenberg will have a change of heart and begin recycling again. • L as director of Public Works of the Township of Middle, would like to thank the participating residents of the township for their extremely fine contributions to making our program the most outstanding recycling program in the county. I would also like to thank the Herald for providing me space to answer Rosenberg and for contributing to the great success of our recycling efforts. The newspaper is extremely well circulated, well read andVell recycled. JAMES E. ALEXIS Committeeman Director of Public Works Middle Township Zagone Qualified To The Editor: After reading the interviews conducted by your newspaper with Nick Zagone and Jim Plousis, candidates for county sheriff, we decided that Nick Zagone is the man for the job. He has all the qualifications necessarv to be an excellent county sheriff. FLORENCE AND WILLIAM FINIZIO Wildwood Crest r Hfrato V *"***>?* WnfeMday By Tttt CorpowMo. P.O. Be 430 Cay H*r Cemri tUmm. 1 Still Off Key C, f To The Editor: — O Since the political campaign of and through the spr- » jng and fall campaign of '84^8ttitSbs and Cretaz, Inc. have . been singing the saniKtaiKfiUng tune ot the 112 percent increase in the local tax structure of Lower Township i And. wouldn't you know it, they are still off key One would think that in a year's time, they would know the : beat. Get in tune Michael and Debbie. The voters of Lower Township sang their score of your off-key aria in the last two elections The voters know that their songbird. Peggie Bierberbach, was outnumbered two to one by Republican committeepersons who were filled with greed, giving themselves a 100 percent salary increase, and that is when Peggie Bierberbach's soprano voice hit the high note with Nay, no raise," but the two avaricious Republican committee-persons baritone voices overpowered Peggie to the tune of a $3,000 high-pitched increase in salary for part-time, shoddy work. • { Also, the use of township cars for personal use-plus incompetent leadership that led to overexpenditures caused I the 112 percent tax increase. | TTie voters knew the chorus well and sang their lullaby < to Stubbs and Cretaz at the polls. | Don't ever underestimate the intelligence of the voters They know Peggie orchestrates her work to harmonize 1 with all the voters of the community. 1 Remember Lincoln's words; "You can fool some of the people some of the time. You can fool some of the people all the tune. But you can't fool all the people all the time." AGNES COYLE North Cape May d
Break GOP Stranglehold To The Editor: I believe the voters of Cape May County, whether Democrat or Republican, have a unique chance in the coming election for freeholders and a sheriff. It will give the voters an opportunity to break the stranglehold the Republicans have on countywide politics, and at the same time select better qualified people. The present solid Republican Freeholders Board is an unhealthy situation, because there is no check and balance on their performance. For instance, I understand the architecture! contract for the new Crest Haven Nursing Home costing $8,781,900 was awarded to James MacDonald of Lower Tc-.nship with no information in the papers who the other bidders were on this contract. This contract is worth anywhere from $700,000 to $900,000 to the architect. I noticed in one of the local papers this same James MacDonald and his wife are running a $50 platter fundraiser for the county Republican Party. ' I ALSO READ iith interest the matter of Cass Clark and other senior citizens' treatment at the county-run arts and crafts classes at the airport center. From what I hear and read, these seniors allege they were harassed and mistreated. I suggest this newspaper send a reporter to get the real facts from these senior citizens. Getting back to the sheriff candidate, there is no comparison in the two men running for this position. First of all, Nick Zagone is a graduate lawyer, was an assistant attorney general in Pennsylvania. In the service (Marines) he ran the Parris Island prison. While in the Marines he also served in the capacity of Defense Counsel, Prosecutor and Law Office (Judge). His opponent has only served as a traffic safety patrolman. PEGGIE BIEBERBACH would be an ideal addition to the Freeholder Board. She could keep the public aware where the vast monies are spent by the freeholders I also know that she will not be afraid to speak her piece to the public, newspapers, etc. I believe this is a good combination, being a woman and being able to speak out for the general public. Rodney Downs ia a quiet, honest, hani-working businessman. This is the type needed on the freeholder board. Whenever Downs does anything, it is for the good ^community. This is clearly illustrated by his volunIt is about time the people of Cape Mav County, whether Democrat or Republican, wised up and got rid of Gerald Thornton in particular. JOSEPH H. DAVIS Villas (ED. NOTE: Davis, an anti-Thornton Republican is deputy mayor of Lower Township)?
