Benefits May Be '
Taxed Up to half the Social Security benefits received by people with higher incomes are subject to the / federal income tax in 1384. Under the new law, up to half of a person's Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits will be included in his or her federal taxable income, if adjusted gross income plus nontaxable interest and half of his or her Social Security benefits exceeds a base amount. The base amount is $25,000 for an individual, $32,000 for a couple filing jointly. THE AMOUNT of benefits that will be included in taxable income will be the lesser of : one half of /the benefits received / or one half of the excess of ther person's combined income — adjusted gross income .plus one half of benefits — over the base amount. This provision places Social Security benefits in a similar position to private pensions, the noncontributory portion of which are subject to federal income taxes. It is estimated that only 10 percent of beneficiaries will be affected by this provision. The money raised by this amendment is designed to put Social Security on a sound financial footing. IRS will provide instructions for paying any additional taxes that may be due when you file your 1984 tax return prior to April 1C 1 OQC
