COURT HOUSE - South Cape Nursing Home on Stiles Avenue has been operating since 1962 and was the first private nursing home in Cape May County. Lawrence R. Powell, administrator, said, "My father, who started the home, was the administrator at Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital before that." Powell, who is 37, has taken over where his father left off. "I
enjoy my work very such. It can be very frustrating, but also extremely » gratifying." The home has 40 beds. All of the facilities are on one floor. The staff numbers 35. "We've just installed the most advanced (state-of-the-art fire alarm system," Powell said, "with a direct hookup to the police and fire stations." THERE ARE NO vacancies, "not right now," he added. "We generally do have a waiting list, which varies from time to time. Many of our residents have been here a number of years. "We normally serve only residents of Cape May County. It's not a good pract i c e to admit residents from more than 30 miles away, in terms of friends and relatives. "We don't like the residents to feel they are cut off from the rest of society. We're more of a family type place. We're very big o n f a m i 1 y environment. "We have a lot of affairs where we encourage families to take part. Of course,
children are always welcome to come in. "We encourage very much all the grandchildren, and all the greatgrandchildren to visit, the more they come, they don't grow up with all the misconceptions about nursing homes — of people being old and ugly and all those misconceptions." i ALL OF THE MEALS at South Cape are prepared on the premises. "It's not institu-
tional food," Powell added. "The food's ,, good here. We Have | very good fopd. I There's no question I about that."
