Cape May Care Center: Two Rare Vacancies

SWAINTON - The dining room turns into a movie theater for showing motion pictures at the Cape May Care Center located on Route 9. Established 21 years ago, the nursing home has been operated by H.I.M. Corp. for the past decade. There are 116 beds, all situated at ground level. The staff numbers 80 employes. "We currently have two vacancies at the moment, which is rare," said Gail Rodgers, activities direct®-. "We usually have a short waiting list. We had more applicants in the summer than we could handle, so we are affected by the summer trade like anyone else." ABOUT TWOTHIRDS of the facilities provide permanent nursing care, and one-third is for rehabilitative therapy. , { Besides movies in the dining room, professional live entertainment is offered in the evenings, plus local amateur talent.

! "It's a good place for anyone with talent ■ Us come," Rodgers said! "We've had r drama groups, magiI cians, music and dance groups, and of course church groups come in, and i children's groups. "WE DEPENT ON local groups to come i in ana fill in between the professional entertainment," the i activities director added. "I've been here for two years and I love it. You feel like your life is really worth something. I was flipping hamburgers before that in a restaurant, and there's just no comparison to what I'm doing now. "For example, we have a men s club that goes out. We took a ride on the Delta Queen. We just came back f r inn the Lobster House — we had a good day there. We try to hop around to all the restaruants. Last Monday we were at BaHy's Park Place Casino. "And as the season permits, we like to go to different areas, IHHHBi^HBBHHBBBIlh. IkSHBMAr' -

like Cold Spring Village. We went to a circus. We had a July carnival. These folks like to be on the road. We us public transportation, plus cars. "WE GO SHOPPING once a week, so they give me a list or they can go with me if they're able to. We pack them in the car with the wheelchair." Nursing home visiting hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friends, families and volunteers are encouraged. "There are many opportunities for volunteers to come in for an hour or whatever they want," Rodgers said. ■"Anyone interested in volunteering can contact me. We have some volunteers that lead bingo and Bible study. We have a wonderful woman who comes in Tuesday nights and plans arts and crafts. "And we always need volunteers for special events, just to be with someone in a wheel clpir. We think it's better if it's one-on-one like that."
