Boost in Benefits For End of Year

According to Del Brooks, Manager of the Wildwood Social Security Office Social Security and Supplemental Securit y Income beneficiaries will receive an increase of 3.5 percent in the benefit checks Social Security beneficiaries receive Jan. 3, and SSI recipients receive Dec. For Social Security beneficiaries, the average monthly benefit amount for an individual retired worker will rise from $434 to $449. UNDER CURRENT law, Social Security and SSI checks -increase automatically each year lj.tilti customer price index] for urban wage earners and clerical workers ^Cpt- W) rises 3.0 percent or more from the third quarter of one year through the corresponding period of the next. But if the index rises less than 3.0 percent there is no automatic increase. Social Security benefit payments from the trust' funds an estimated to be $6.2 billion higher in 1985, because of the atuomatic increase. The 1985 cost of the SSI increase will be about $205 million, payable from the general funds of the treasury.

In addition, the. maximum amount of annual earnings subject to the Social Securitv tax will increase from $37,800 to $39,600 on Jan. 1, 1985, Brooks stated. THE 1985 wage base was determined under automatic adjustment provisions of the law and is tied to the increase in average wages as determined on the basis of data provided by the Internal Revenue Service. A number of other changes will also become effective Jan. 1 as a result of these automatic provisons. They include: • Tne maximum, amount' of earnings v that a beneficiary under age 65 may - earn without losing any Social Security benefits will increase from $5,160 this year to $5,400 in 1985. • The ex em p t amount for beneficiaries aged 65 through 69 will increase from $6,960 to $7,320 in 1985. • The amount of earnings required for a quarter of coverage will increase to $410, up from $390 this year.

Social Security Questions and Answers

Q. Does Medicare hospital insurance pay for care in a psychiatric hospital? A. Yes, but it can help pay for no more than a lifetime total of 190 days of care in a participating psychiatric hospital Q. I understand that Medicare can sometimes help pay for hospice care. Exactly what is a hospice? A. HOSPICE is primarily a comprehensive home care program which provides all the reasonable and necessary medical and support services for the management of a terminal illness, including pain control. Covered services include physician services, nursing ^ care, medical appliances and supplies (including outpatient drugs for symp- - torn management and pain relief), home health aide and homemaker services, therapies, medical social services, and counseling. In addition to the broad range of outpatient services, short-term impatient care is also covered. When a patient receives these services from a Medicarecertified hospice, Medicare hospital insurance pays almost the entire cost. There are no deductibles or co-payments, except for limited cost-sharing for outpatient drugs and inpatient respite care.
