Rx ... . — by Dr. Robert C. Beitman
Diverticulosis is. found in over 30 million Americans, predominantly in those over the age of 60 and almost never under 30. The disease is though by some to be a disorder of the aging process and a consequence of Western society and tour eating habits. In diverticulosis, | numerous small sacIlike outpouchings develop in the walls of I the colon, although i these sacs can appear « anywhere in the I digestive tract. IT IS WHEN these f pouches.. called | '^dtver-fjculae", ► become ipflamed or E infectdo that a ^medical problem callL ed "diverticulitis" 7 results. This is much I more common in the | United States and ■ Europe than in A developing countries. The theory for this b is that more fiber is P consumed iii areas £ such as Africa and g Asia. The fiber then ■ binds up particles § that might otherwise | have become trapped ■ in the outpouchings, I and moves it safely | out of the colon. ■ Most people with diverticulosis will have no symptoms at all. Some may experience cramping pains and sometimes tenderness in the left side of the abdomen. Passing gas or moving the bowels may temporarily relieve the symptoms. BOWEL movements are often small and hard and there may be occasional attacks of diarrhea. Sometimes there will be blood from the diverticuiae which will show bright red in the bowel movements. In the more acute diverticulitis there will be severe abdominal pain, usually in the lower left side. It may get worse with a bowel movement. You ma yv feel nauseous and run a fever. If you probe your abdomen you may be able to pinpoint the sore spot. Some people will feel incapacitated~T5y~the pain, which will periodically lessen and then worsen again. UNTREATED diverticulitis can be life threatening. The indivfdual outpouchings can break through, allowing contents from the bowel to spill into the body, creating generalized infection.
The intestine can also become obstructed, blocking off the contents from passing out of the body. The diverticuiae can stretch into a "fistula", a canal branching off of the digestive tract to accumulate contents which cannot get back into the colon. This can lead to "peritonitis", a widespread infection of the abdominal cavity, which can go on to '.'sepsis", or in: fectiori in the body's blood stream. accordingly; always consult your . physician if your bowels behave in an unusual manner or if you have a persistent pain in the lower part of your abdomen. If your symptoms show that you are having some kind of acute attack in your ab-
domen, seek immediate emergency help. Blood in the bowel movement can represent many different digestive diseases. It is one of the warning signs of cancer and should always be reported promptly to your doctor. Your treatment will range from dietary changes to hospitalization with intravenous antibiotics, to special cleansing out of the digestive tract. Surgery in certain cases may be suggested only after multiple bouts. Dr. Beitman is president-elect of the Cape May County Unit of the American Cancer Society." Health Watch is one of the many ACS public education projects.
